Development of individual education support system for children with developmental disabilities: Suggestion of shelter for emotional control

Published: 29 May 2019 Publication History

Abstract

In recent years, the number of children requiring special support has increased significantly, and satisfying supports for them and educational needs has been becoming a critical concern. Many students have been diagnosed with one or more developmental disabilities, such as autism-spectrum disorders, high functioning autism, attention-deficit disorders, hyperactive disorders and learning disabilities. Children with these disabilities cannot get sufficient supports and the impact of these disabilities is serious situation.
Therefore, we must support people with developmental disabilities effectively. The supports should be attentive depending on their individual needs and disorder characteristics. This support will benefit the whole class, because developmental disabilities have recently been estimated to afflict as much as 10% of students in regular classes. For children with developmental disabilities, the special support is required not only in their life but also in education, which is especially important.
We have experimentally developed an individual education support system that teachers, parents and supporters can use. This database system is storing the individual daily behavior data about them. After analyzing the accumulated behavior information, we could find sensory hypersensitivity and difficulty of emotional controlling. Finally, this study proposes a tiny shelter room for emotional control with adjusted environment using the ICT system based on analysis results and elements of indoor environment, which assumes classrooms.
