Smart virtual prototypes: distributed 3D product simulations for Web based environments

Published: 21 February 2000 Publication History

Abstract

A technology that enables development of functional and interactive 3D product design models for web based environments is presented. A novel prototyping feature of these models is that they have capabilities to simulate complicated functions of the target product. Simulation can be executed either locally in the host environment or in a distributed manner between the client and server environments. In the latter case, 3D visualization model of the product is executed on the client side, and complex functional and behavioral simulations on the server side. Downloadable product models can be supplied with intelligent software agents and other plug-ins that perform specific tasks, such as recording of interaction data for usability tests. Because of their capabilities, these product models are called smart virtual prototypes. Also outlined are the integrated design-time and run-time environments for developing smart virtual prototypes.
