Catching a Few Important Fish: Internet Mediated Plagiarism

Published: 31 January 2017 Publication History

Abstract

Students paying others to do their work is not new, but it has received significant attention recently. Such students are guilty of plagiarism but it is a different form to the common failures of omitted attribution or collusion. These acts are not (normally) detectable using the usual tools such as MOSS which look for duplication.
While the number of (known) cases occurring may not be large relative to class sizes, it is important that these individuals are identified not just because of possible damage to reputation but also to morale.
This work considers "contract cheating" and an approach to identifying guilty parties once a cheating incidence has been detected. This approach makes use of simple automation and is not overly burdensome even for large classes.
