On the Estimation of Underwater Acoustic Channel Delay-Scale Spreading Function

Published: 12 November 2014 Publication History

Abstract

The delay-scale spreading function of a channel depicts the the effect of multipath delays and temporal/spectral scale changes to the transmitted signal. The underwater acoustic channel is suitable to be modeled as a delay-scale time-varying channel. In our study, methods of estimating the delay-scale spreading function are summarized and compared. In addition, by discretizing the continuous variables of the delay-scale spreading function, the estimation based on wideband deconvolution is derived in terms of matrix manipulation. In the choice of the transmitted signal wave, signals with large fractional frequency and/or large time-bandwidth product are considered. Furthermore, the specific sparsity of the underwater acoustic channel is considered, and a modified orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is proposed to recover the channel parameters.
