Acoustic telemetry for the last decade and challenges for the next one

Published: 11 November 2013 Publication History

Abstract

The review article [Kilfoyle and Baggeroer, IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 25(1), 4-27 (2000)] surveyed the literature for underwater acoustic communication up to January 2000. This presentation attempts to update the literature review since then. Some themes for the next decade are also suggested. The emphasis is on the physical layer since there is ample room for performance improvements at this layer in the context of acoustic communication networks. Important components for the physical layer in acoustic communication systems include 1) models of the underwater acoustic channel, 2) transversal and time reversal equalizer, as well as equalizer training, 3) diversity, direct spread spectrum, OFDM, MIMO coding, vectors sensors, stealth, and 4) some perspectives on networks. A review of the last decades and perspectives for the next on these topics are considered.
