Abstract
The paper presents a brief examination of the use of composite indices in the analysis of information society issues. The problem of measurement is the Achilles heel of the information society research. Despite, or possibly because of this reason, one can find a number of quantitative studies on the topic. In recent years, studies using composite indices are gaining broader media popularity. This paper discusses the basic methodological issues as well as strengths and limitations of such tools. It presents the main pros and cons of using them in information society research.
