Abstract

Mobile IP is the current standard for IP-based wireless access networks. However, there are some drawbacks of using Mobile IP to support micro-mobility of mobile hosts. Several proposals have been presented to overcome these drawbacks and perhaps the most important of these is Handoff-Aware Wireless Access Internet Infrastructure (HAWAII). In this paper, a comparative analysis of the performance of Mobile IP and HAWAII is performed with respect to the four different issues, namely: Power up, Micro-mobility, Macro-mobility and Paging. The results of this comparison show that HAWAII provides better functionality for Power up, Micro-mobility and Paging, and both Mobile IP and HAWAII provide essentially the same functionality for Macro-mobility.
