The Pro’s and Contra’s of an Interactive Location Based Service Using UMTS Transmission

Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism 2010

Abstract

This research presents the Digital Dowsing Rod (DIWI1) a framework of a Interactive Location Based Service (iLBS) to explore the cultural heritage of a region. The DIWI consists of a service oriented architecture (SOA), a web-client, a content management system and a mobile client based on smart phones and windows mobile technology. Users can generate their own POIs (called Parlance Points) at a location and share them immediately with other users reaching these locations. An extended user test was carried out in the “Grebbelinie” area, the Netherlands. The testers hiked and biked via different routes through that area using the application. Despite a number of technical shortcomings of the UMTS transmission in a rural area, the DIWI was positively valued by the testers, but the added value of the information of the Parlance Point was limited. But for personal use the PP does have an additional value.
