Abstract
Based on a qualitative, exploratory case study, this research pivots around a three course, twelve credit, one year post-baccalaureate certificate (PBC) centering on community-based learning (CBL). We unpack the experiences and elicit the insights of our first cohort of Fellows (2020–2021). Interviewees discussed their motivations for applying; their project-based CBL work in three courses (data science, design thinking/UX, and a capstone) performed individually or in teams; their community competencies development (communication, technical, design, and community needs analysis); the ways in which the PBC enhanced their career opportunities (pursuing the Master’s degree, tying in their PBC work with their current jobs, and its salutary impact on their career prospects); and how the certificate promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) through targeted recruitment, a cohort structure, and community engagement. We discuss and reflect on lessons learned, the ways in which our research extends and complicates the existing literature, and suggestions for future research.
