Abstract

In a data-driven world personal data is key to every business decision and strategy. Telling a story from raw data is a specialized skill gate-kept by graduate level data visualization education and occupational software. Lack of data literacy is increasingly perceived as embarrassing and detrimental to adults’ understanding of the world around them. In this regard, an user experience case study was conducted to develop a method and tool to empower users to artfully tell stories with data. Robust human-centered design methodologies were employed to identify target users, develop deep user insights, and provide recommendations for a detailed design execution of a new creative data visualization tool concept. The results of this study demonstrated the potential of proposed tools in increasing user’s data-knowledge through the medium of art. The new creative visualization tool developed could be further refined for children to increase their knowledge of the data-driven world and interest in STEAM careers.
