Abstract
Self-care applications are commonly presented with visuals that empower users to reflect on their health data. Self-reflective visualizations play an important role in educating healthcare consumers to take proactive steps in managing their health independently. These visualizations are vital, and they should be carefully designed to meet the needs and requirements of users. We have developed a model to aid developers to design effective self-reflective visualizations. In this paper, we have explored the perspectives of healthcare professionals towards visuals offered in self-care applications. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten healthcare professionals which were then analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. In general, healthcare professionals were pleased with the visuals that are presented in existing self-care applications provided that they foster self-reflection amongst users. Several design factors were recommended to be included in self-care applications such as motivating and encouraging notifications, suitable colored graphs, emphasizing attitude change, reliable visuals, and respecting user privacy.
