Abstract
Mobile Agent technology forms today the basis for the realisation of many innovative and flexible telecommunication architectures. After its emerging application in telecommunications management, intelligent networking and mobile communications, the increasing adoption of internet technologies in the telco environment suggests a new promising application domain: Voice over IP environments. This paper presents a mobile agent based VoIP service provision architecture. This architecture is based on the integration of the Grasshopper agent platform, a state of the art mobile agent platform which has been developed for the implementation of advanced telecommunication service environments, and an IETF based VoIP protocol suite, i.e., the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and related IETF protocols. The outlined architecture, in which most of the SIP entities are realised by mobile agents enables a more flexible and distributed realisation of VoIP services providing better load balancing, and particularly user mo bility.
