Abstract
In a web farm, a collection of hardware and software resources is used to host a number of distinct sites. In general, resources are permanently assigned to a single customer site. Because peak loads are an order of magnitude greater than average loads [8], site availability is guaranteed by allocating excess resources, that are largely unused, to each site. Océano [1] proposes a new hosting model in which availability is guaranteed by rapid dynamic allocation of hardware resources based on observed request streams. Resources are quickly assigned when load increases and may be reassigned when load decreases. This paper describes how Océano uses the underlying network infrastructure to dynamically reassign nodes between customer site and how it provides site isolation.
