Abstract
This paper discusses the relevance of agent-based and service-based approaches to the technical and organizational transformation sought by modern armed forces. It describes the rationale for using these approaches, potential benefits, and challenges — which are both organizational and technical. It then identifies gaps and areas for research including service discovery, support for a wide range of interaction patterns, and operation over low-bandwidth networks.
