About Lunar New Year 2025
This Doodle celebrates the Lunar New Year! The first new moon of the lunar calendar has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in many countries across Asia. The Doodle artwork celebrates the year of the snake — a time for growth, creativity, and transformation!
To usher in the new year and welcome an early spring, young family members kneel, bow, and pay respect to older people in a tradition called sebae (세배). People play festive games including the traditional board game yunnori (윷놀이) or jegichagi, which involves dribbling a paper jegi in the air for as long as possible.
The Lunar New Year is often celebrated with loved ones. Families gather for traditional favorites like ttoekguk (rice cake soup), joen (sweet fritters) and other delicacies. Gifts of fruit, decor, flowers, money, and more are also exchanged with friends and family, symbolizing good fortune and the passing of another year.
Don’t forget to light a lantern tonight for a year of laughter, luck, and happiness — Happy Seollal to all who celebrate!
