Well, Golbez. I like blue rather than pink. Also, pink (maps) and grey (wikipedia) do not look good together. I think so. I've just changed the hue and shade with fireworks. It was a little change, not more. You did good making these maps. I've just changed the color a little. Tell me if you don't like it. We can find a better color if you want. Another point, your version is 10876 bytes and my version is 6270 bytes. I'm english-2 please forgive my grammar mistakes. Greetings from Bolivia Alhen ..··.··.. 06:42, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

"southern Lebanon" district
[edit]Hi, I wasent aware of this area being in the control of United Nations. I looked just now at the map in the UNIFIL website. Still, I'm not sure we can define the area as "UNIFIL control area". The map only shows UNIFIL deployment in the area and there "Operational boundary". I can tell you that in parctice the area is in the control of the Hezbollah terorists who have posts in the area, including on the border line with Israel. Hashekemist 19:25, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Azerbaijan Regions
[edit]Hey Golbez, I have a small request, you wrote in the following map Shushi but its Shusha. Can you correct that mistake, thanks: 1 Azeri 17:23, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Azeri
Hey Golbez, I had another idea for images like this. Since both the dates and the areas are changing, it's kind of too much to look at all at once. So I had an idea that you could have a time-bar at the bottom of the image and instead of changing the date, a highlight jumps from section to section. Then less is changing each image and you can concentrate more on the area changes. It can also indicate better the length of each time period.
eg.
|-----|-----------------------|-|------------|----------------->
Does it make sense? Do you think it would work?
Also, if you're happy for other people to try and improve your work, it's a good idea to upload the composite pieces separately. (Well, maybe they are easy to pull apart in GIFs, I don't know.) You can just upload each piece over the other with a summary saying which one it is, then revert back to the animated one. All previous versions are linked at the bottom of the image description page.
cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:24, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
- The fact that the maps move is a very good reason to keep them together by uploading them over the same image. Of course it needs dates; I would put the dates ON the timeline.
- I would also, I dunno, reconsider how these maps are going to be used. I mean it looks great at 1000px but are you sure you don't want to shoot for something that's going to look decent at 250px? That's a much more realistic size that it's going to be viewed at, 99% of the time, after all. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:17, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Commons-l subscription
[edit]Hello Golbez,
as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.
If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:03, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

East Timor maps
[edit]Hello Golbez! Sorry, I didn't know there is an special Admin for East Timor maps. First, here are my sources. Yesterday, it was too late for posting them: Official document about Subdistrict Mape-Zumalaimoving from Ainaro to Cova Lima and a district map with the new borders. This changing was made in 2003. I found this case, as I was wondering, why Mape-Zumalai was noticed everywhere on Wikipedia in Cova Lima, but the cities were on maps of Ainaro. --Patrick 12:19, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Map question

Map question2
[edit]Hi. You have left me a message about the maps. They are based on blank and a blank map of a country can be made by anyone. Coloring and changing it seemed to be an independent work to me. At that time I did not see a reason to attribute it, I still do not. If you disagree, please give me your reasoning and if I am satisfied I can change the tags. I placed them in commons so that all other projects can use it, so if you want, you can start putting it on English or any other wikipedia. I did not see a reason to specifiaclly indicate the location of former Nagorno Karabakh AO of Azerbaijan SSR in all the maps. I don't think though it is a big issue. Anyway, I'll be waiting for your answer and as I am extremely busy these days, it may take a couple of days for me to read messages. I'm sorry for that. :) Oh, and I too may sound a bit jerkish, but it's not the way. Bye. --TimBits 15:35, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- Oh by the way, I have stopped uploading the files, cause I think we need svg files and I'll be working on that when I have time. --TimBits 15:40, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, I gotta bother you one more time, cause I'll leave for a 3 day work and will not be able to respond. Is something like this acceptable - Map of XXX by YYY, based on a map made by user:Golbez ? Cause I really want it to be free, I don't like anyone reserving any rights in such projects. If not let me know, then I might make another blank for myself and work based on that. What do you think? Give me an advice on that one. Bye. --TimBits 16:56, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
My reasoning? I made the blank. I went through the trouble and research of making it. I based it off public domain works and personal research. And the license clearly requires any derivative works to attribute me. Also, it's simply good form. I agree completely that we need SVG maps, but til then, I still need proper credit. :) Fair enough. If the kind of attribution I have proposed above is OK with you then I can add it to the summary. The only thing I am against is the CC tag. As I said I am against reserving any right to the images here and I personally would not want even an attribution for my work in this project, but that's me. So if the attibution in the summary is enough then let me know. If not, I am sorry then I'll be forced to make a new blank page and base my works on that. I hope you understand my point. And no, we won't be using these on the English pedia, we seem happy with the maps that I made Well, probably nor for long. As soon as the svg conversion is done I'll take care of the English wikipedia too. We can talk about the details there when the time comes. In fact, I think my maps were in use on the Az articles before you replaced them Sure, better than nothing. Also, if you're going to remove the NKAO, you may want to remove the dotted lines as well. Good idea. No problem if there's a delay in your response, I was surprised to see one so quickly. :) Is it better to contact you here or on az? I do work in 3 day periods and the rest of the week I go to the school. So, can't promise a prompt response, sometimes I check quite frequently and sometimes I am absent for days. I haven't done anything in English Wikipedia for months for instance. As a rule, I'll check Az.wikipedia more frequently. Anyway let me know if you are ok with my idea. Bye. --TimBits 20:09, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

cape verde maps
[edit]I had access to some maps of the islands of Cape Verde, but they were in DGN format. after a deep research i managed to find a free program that would open them (Bentley View) and convert them to pdf, and then convert them to svg with Corel. however, they are huge, as I printed the pdf's with A0 paper size; anyway, i'll try to add them soon. for now, i have some PNG's i'd like you to take a look at (i have a gallery of them on my userpage) and tell me what do you think. --Waldir 21:18, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Image:Samoa districts numbered.png
[edit]Hi Golbez, may I ask you to produce a second version of your map, with "official" numberering sequence rather than alphabetical? The districts are now in that order in the district table of the english wikipedia article [3]. Thank you.--Ratzer1 06:38, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- The political districts themselve have no numbers, the election districts (into those they are further subdivided) do. From the numbering of the election districts arises an official sequence of the political districts. For that, look at map [4]. This is a scan of an Govt. of Samoa document (although it doesn't say it, I know it since I've seen it years ago in a library).
I thought it is better to let the numbers of the reference map in wikipedia go hand in hand with the sequence in which the districts are listed.--Ratzer1 10:41, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Excellent maps, translation to German?
[edit]Dear Golbez, I am really impressed by the several detailed and informative maps in the Commons:Category:Territorial Growth Maps of the United States. These are really the best maps I have ever seen on this topic. I am working in the German Wikipedia and would like to create some articles dealing with historical U.S. territories and Canadian territories. For this reason I want to ask you if you could support me in constructing German translations of your maps (I used some of them, e.g., in the article de:Historische Territorien auf dem Boden der Vereinigten Staaten but I would like to expand on this topic).--Furfur 18-9-07 11:47 CEST —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.123.89.127 (talk) 09:56, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
- I'd love to help, though it's still a work in progress in a few areas (see the 'to do' on the talk page). I love translating and helping translate my stuff into other languages, so just let me know what you need. :) (would it be better for us to communicate on commons, so we don't have to hop back and forth between wikipedias? :)) :--Golbez 22:43, 18. Sep. 2007 (CEST)
- Hello Golbez, I have moved this discussion to your Wikimedia talk-Page. Thank you for your helpfulness! I would mostly be interested in the translation of the maps in Category:Territorial Growth Maps of the United States, Category:Maps of the history of Mexico and Category:Maps of the history of Canada (... although I have noticed that you have created lots of other interesting maps ...). How could we proceed? I could provide you with a translation of every map, if you want. --Furfur 19-7-7 13:53 CEST
There's three things to translate in each map:
- The states/provinces; I can get this easily enough from dewiki.
- The additional notes, like the key, explanations like "Connecticut reserve" and what happened to Kansas Territory, etc.
- The explanations at the bottom of each frame in the animated versions; these don't exist yet for the US ones but I plan to when I finish that list, whenever that is.
So let's start with the simplest one first - Canada. I can change the maps I have to have the German names for the provinces (I see a few of them have different names) right now without needing help, thanks to dewiki, while you supply translations for the extra terms and explanations in each map? --Golbez 23:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Dear Golbez, please excuse the delay in my response but for quite a long time I did not log into the Commons. There are German names for some territories and provinces, but some of them are not very common (e.g. Neu-Braunschweig instead of New Brunswick or Neu-Schottland instead of Nova Scotia). The only names that should be translated are: "Nordwest-Territorien" instead of "Northwest Territories", "Yukon-Territorium" instead of "Yukon Territory" and "Neufundland und Labrador" instead of "Newfoundland and Labrador".
- In the animated gif image Image:Canada provinces evolution.gif the following translations could be implemented:

Hi - This is a great illustration! I have one suggestion: Instead of writing "Sometime in 1874", just write "1874". This will give a more professional appearance, and the lack of month and day clearly implies that only the year is known. (Same for other "Sometime in XXXX") -SCEhardT 06:26, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Map standard
[edit]Hello, I have now more free time to involve in this issue, accordingly, I made a clean up and gave you more suitable answer here (unroll the summary box). In sum, there is a proposal waiting comments and approval, no yet a guideline.
For countries, Sting and myself (very active on this Map standard creation) both think that maps should be as much of possible neutral and factual, and so display neighbourg countries. ("do not wape your neighbors out of the maps..."). Countries' borders are State-centered. We, people, have not to support such blind visions who cut roads as soon as then leave the country. Req map for BC like Canada one
[edit]Hi; just noticed your territorial evolution of Canada map; if you have the time could I interest you in making a similar one for British Columbia, theoretically starting in 1849 up to 1871; although something that maybe shows the Columbia District and New Caledonia might also be good but it gets complicated because of Russian and American overlapping history in the area, and the meaning of New Caledonia changed over time, esp. 1846-1858...; fairly complicated in text but it might be that a map like the one you've generated for Canada might work real well; if you've got hte time/inclination let me know (on my regular wiki talkpage pls and I'll give you a list of territories and dates of change etc...Skookum1 (talk) 22:44, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Nuevo Mexico image needed
[edit]Hi Golbez.
I have used one of the graphics you created, File:Mexico 1824-11-24 to 1830.png, in the Wikipedia article Wikipedia:Spanish land grants in New Mexico. It's not that the graphic works perfectly, but it was the best I could find and sort of represented the Nuevo Mexico territory in about the time frame I was interested in. (viz, it was at least a time under Mexican sovereignty and not modern US sovereignty.)
My question is, might you be willing to generate a map that shows the general geographical territory of Nuevo Mexico under both Spanish and Mexican sovereignty in the 17th to mid-19th centuries? Or failing that, Nuevo Mexico under Mexican sovereignty in the mid-19th century? I imagine the latter would be easiest to do as you could pretty much just modify the colors and label in the less-than-perfect graphic I'm using now. The current map shows it in the same color as Alta California and other Mexican territories and is specific to an 8-year time period. I think the WP article would benefit from something more general. [edit]Please, help me! 3 photos of mine are in the project without the permission of the people portraited. Could you please delate them? Here are the pics: File:A woman's portrait.JPG File:Portrait d'une femme.jpg File:A girl looking at herself in the mirror.jpg
I really appreciate your help. Thank you
- Just for your information. Alessandro has asked 12 admins at the same time to perform these deletions. In between, regular DRs have been filed for Commons:Deletion requests/File:Portrait d'une femme.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:A woman's portrait.JPG, whereas the third image is heavily used on many projects. I would recommend not to file a speedy without any further input from the uploader. --Túrelio (talk) 13:27, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine
[edit]Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:22, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

CSA map
[edit]"MO and KY were indeed admitted to the CSA"
The problem is that they didn't secede from the Union, but the animation claims they did.
If secession is not declared by the democratically elected congress--the official law makers of a state--then it does not count as the state seceding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_in_the_American_Civil_War#Elections_of_1861 Kentucky, at least, did not vote to secede.
Not only that, but they also never voted to rejoin the Union, so either one of the following must be true: A) They never seceded B) Missouri and Kentucky are the remainder of the CSA today.
Since B) isn't true (by international agreement that both Missouri and Kentucky are part of the sovereign USA), the only other option is A) (unless there is a third option that I have not considered).
Rational for change: Until the "new" version is completed, the current version at least needs to show factual accuracy.
Rational for change: Seeing as on the "talk" page on Wikipedia for the file "CSA states evolution.gif" has the discussion "Any plans to fix the problems?" more recently than the discussion "Kentucky joined the Confederacy?" AND "Any plans to fix the problems?" was last modified almost 4 years ago (so nobody has objected to the proposed changes in 4 years), my version most accurately reflects the talk page.
Actions taken: Removed the animation from the CSA page. "Animation removed until a concensus has been reached."
Actions taken: Copy/pasted the previous text into the CSA "talk" page.
I have not reverted your revert, although I believe that I have full rights to, as I know you'll most likely revert it again under the "3 reverts rule". Travürsa (talk) 14:52, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

File:Canada provinces evolution.gif
[edit]Hi!
Do you still have files of your work for File:Canada provinces evolution.gif. I want to translate it in French. Thank you! — Riba (talk) 16:46, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- First of all, thanks for your interest. :) I still have all the frames, yes. However, I suggest instead of the frames for that version, you look at File:Canada provinces evolution 2.gif, which is greatly improved over the original. All the frames for this one are available on Commons in . I suppose I could try uploading the Gimp XCF I used to create these as well, for others to play with.
If you like, and if you think it'd be simpler, you could tell me all of the French text, and I could easily replace the existing text with it and generate it that way. --Golbez (talk) 20:29, 3 June 2013 (UTC)- Thanks for your answer! It would be really kind if you can modify the file yourself. I think I am able but it would definitively take we a whole day... Are you going to take the « new » file? I would be able to send you the translation this weekend. Is it ok for you? Thank very much. — Riba (talk) 01:21, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

I did the translation on User:Riba/Sandbox. If you still have time to put the text in the file, it would be wonderful! Take your time to do it. Could you enlarge the caption in the box at the bottom left (the one with Provinces/Territories/Other countries)? It is really small, and it's hard to see the colors. I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
[edit]Dear Golbez,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,

- Golbez, can you please just pick up any map from Category:Maps of the United States from before 2017, and we close this matter? Thank you! --Ruthven (msg) 12:19, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
- I agree with you, but blind adherence to rules (which are interpretable, thus flexible even in Court) is a danger for the project. We cannot allow to have hundreds of historical maps deleted because someone is unable to reason with clarity, and needs a proof even for PD information. This would harm Wikipedia, Commons, and all the other projects and schools that use those maps. So, what solution do you propose, if you do not remember the exact map you used to create yours? --Ruthven (msg) 08:36, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, but you should argue with other admins (the ones that delete your work) in particular. Btw, I noticed that you mentioned as a source, in your Pacific Ocean maps some "SVG map present on Commons". In fact, I recognise the style of the svg maps we use here. Maybe it's simpler to identify that US blank svg map... they are all the same, as one is derived from the other :) --Ruthven (msg) 14:30, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
- Indeed, and I can and will do that, because 1) That's based on an SVG, and not a low-res trace; 2) That's from commons and not a public domain source, and 3) Done more recently and I can actually source it. Thanks for pointing that out. See, I'm not unreasonable. Pull an SVG in to an editor is a lot different than making a low-res trace. (I mean, look at Long Island. That's not professional quality. This map is a mess. But, it's the root from which I built the whole thing, so I have to stick with it or start aaaaall over) --Golbez (talk) 14:58, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!
[edit]Dear Golbez
Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.
After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.
The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.
As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.
Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Please take a short survey regarding UCoC
[edit]Hello Golbez,
I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.
As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.
You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.
Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
De-adminship warning
[edit]Dear Golbez. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.
If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.
You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.
Thank you -- CptViraj (talk) 07:59, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
Please remain calm and collegial

Thank you for your service
[edit]Hi Golbez, I am sorry to see you to lose your admin bit under such unfortunate circumstances. Please do not get upset. We should be grateful for your past services and I would like to see you running again when you happen to have more time for Commons. Best wishes, AFBorchert (talk) 18:21, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
- I don't know you, and I understand how you feel, but somehow I think if you ever decide to run another RFA, you've made it an uphill struggle. Admins are supposed to understand that "rules are rules", however st00pid, and I'm sorry you feel that way. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 22:30, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
- The choice has already been made. Maybe 15 years ago I might have cared, but now? --Golbez (talk) 02:08, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
Civility/Attack warning
[edit]Stop this now. If you continue it further, you may see yourself blocked. Hope this is clear enough. 4nn1l2 (talk) 22:44, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Hi there, I am interested in using United States 1789-08-1790-04.png map for a book for students of Planning. I am wondering if it would be possible for us to the copyright conditions for using the image and whom do we credit(any specific name/institute) for the publication.
