A large pichwai depicting Maha Daan Leela or the 'festival of the toll' in which Shrinathji’s exacts a toll from the gopis of Vraj as they go out to sell their milk, curd and butter.
Summary

English: Seen here is the image of Krishna and the gopis in four registers, terminating at the bottom with Krishna and Radha in embrace on the banks of a flowering lotus filled river. The background in the upper register presents the city of Vraja – the surroundings of a temple complex beneath images of deities flying in jewel encrusted gold chariots pulled by their various vahanas and centred by an image of Surya (the sun god). The central panel is bordered on both sides with Shrinathji in various swaroopas delicately labelled in Devanagari script. The outer borders to all sides contain pink roses with leaves. An inscription at the bottom reads 'Chitrakar (artist) Khubiram Gopilal' in Devanagari, informing us of who made this pichwai. |
