Alterations of Sexual Function in Women Diagnosed with HPV Infection: A Prospective Cohort Study

Purpose: The psychological impacts of an HPV-positive test are well-documented; however, the consequences on sexual function remain underexplored. This prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the effects of HPV diagnosis on the sexual function of affected women.Methods: Sexual function was assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire at baseline and again at a six-month follow-up.Results: The analysis revealed a decrease in the overall FSFI score among women diagnosed with HPV over the six-month follow-up period. Although these changes did not achieve statistical significance, they were consistent with prior research indicating negative impacts on sexual function following an HPV diagnosis. Additionally, the results underscore the importance of addressing the mental health implications associated with HPV positivity and the potential factors contributing to sexual dysfunction in this population.Conclusions: These findings suggest that HPV positivity may adversely affect sexual function in women. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and to develop appropriate interventions aimed at supporting the sexual health and overall well-being of HPV-positive individuals.
