Route 40 (Japanese: 40ばんすいどう Water Route 40) is a water route in southwestern Johto, connecting Olivine City and Route 41.

Route description

Lyra reading a sign next to the gate that leads to the Battle Frontier in Generation IV

This route consists of a small amount of land that is dwarfed in proportion by the surrounding ocean. All that a Trainer must do is head south, towards the Whirl Islands, defeating a few Trainers along the way. The Pokémon selection in this route is equally bland, comprising only of the most commonly appearing sea route Pokémon: Tentacool and Tentacruel.

However, in Pokémon Crystal, the entrance to the Battle Tower will be on this route, giving Trainers much more to do after defeating the sixteen Gym Leaders of the game. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Battle Tower returns, joined by four other facilities in the series' third Battle Frontier. The Battle Frontier found here is nearly identical to the one found in the Sinnoh region.

Also, in HeartGold and SoulSilver, a man will turn the player back towards Olivine City if the player does not have the HM Surf.

Monica appears on the beach on Mondays and gives a Sharp Beak to the player the first time they talk to her, and an Alert Ribbon the second time and all times after (Generation IV only).
