Funkcija
urediKristalini se dijele u dvije klase: specifične za taksone ili enzime i sveprisutne. Potonja klasa čini glavne proteine kičmenjaka očne leće i održava transparentnost i indeks prelamanja sočiva. Prva klasa se naziva i filogenetski ograničeni kristalini. Ovaj gen kodira kristalinski protein specifičan za takson koji ima NADPH-ovisnu aktivnost kinon-reduktaze, različitu od drugih poznatih kinon-reduktaza. Nedostaje mu aktivnost alkohol-dehidrogenaza, iako se po sličnosti smatra članom porodice alkohol-dehidrogenaza koje sadrže cink. Za razliku od drugih sisarskih vrsta, kod ljudskih sočiva ekspresija je niska. Poznato je da postoji jedan pseudogen.[5]
