Young ran for election for Mayor of Cincinnati in Ohio. Young was disqualified from the primary scheduled on May 4, 2021.

2017
The city of Cincinnati, Ohio, held elections on November 7, 2017. A primary election for the mayoral race was held on May 2, 2017. The top two vote-getters faced each other in the general election. The filing deadline for mayoral candidates was February 16, 2017. All nine seats on the city council were up for election. Regardless of the number of candidates, Cincinnati does not hold a primary election for the city council races. The filing deadline for city council candidates was August 24, 2017.[1] The following candidates ran in the geneal election for nine seats on the Cincinnati City Council.[2]

Noteworthy events
Young indicted on records tampering charge
On April 15, 2021, Wendell Young was indicted on one charge of tampering with records. Special prosecutor Patrick Hanley said that Young "knowingly and with the purpose to defraud, destroyed text messages that belonged to a government entity."[3] Young's lawyer, Scott Croswell, said, "I reviewed the indictment and we intend to defend it vigorously."[4]
The Cincinnati City Council held a vote on May 26, 2021, to decide whether or not to suspend Young. To suspend a council member, seven of the remaining eight members of the council had to vote in favor of suspension. Only six members voted to suspend Young, and two members abstained.[5]
On December 1, 2021, Young pleaded no contest and agreed to pay a $100 fine.[6]
