Governor of American Samoa

The Lieutenant Governor of the State of American Samoa is an elected constitutional officer, the second-ranking officer of the executive branch, and the first officer in line to succeed the governor of American Samoa. The lieutenant governor is popularly elected every four years on a joint ticket with the governor.[1]

The current Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa is Pulu Ae Ae (nonpartisan). Ae Ae assumed office in 2025.

Authority

The American Samoa Constitution establishes the office of lieutenant governor in Article IV, Executive Branch.

American Samoa Constitution, Article 4, Section 2

The Governor and the Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa shall, commencing with the first Tuesday following the first Monday of Nov­ember 1977, be popularly elected and serve in accordance with the laws of American Samoa.

Qualifications

In order to be eligible for the office of lieutenant governor of American Samoa, a candidate must be:[2]

  • Either a United States citizen or a United States national;
  • a bona fide resident of American Samoa for 5 years immediately preceding the election; and
  • at the time of assuming office, 35 years of age or older.

Duties

The duties and privileges of the lieutenant governor are outlined in Article IV of the American Samoa Constitution:

The Secretary of American Samoa, who may be referred to as Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa, shall have all the powers and duties of the Governor in the case of a vacancy in the office of Governor or the disability or temporary absence of the Governor. He shall record and preserve the laws and executive orders, and transmit copies thereof to the Secretary of the Interior. He shall have and perform such other duties as may be prescribed by law or assigned to him by the Governor.
