City government

The city of Lansing utilizes a strong mayor and city council system. In this form of municipal government, the city council serves as the city's primary legislative body and the mayor serves as the city's chief executive.

Mayor

The mayor is the city's chief executive. The responsibilities of the mayor include proposing a budget, signing legislation into law, serving as conservator of the peace, appointing departmental directors, and overseeing the city's day-to-day operations. The mayor also represents the city on the state, national, and international levels.[1][2]

The current Mayor of Lansing is Andy Schor (nonpartisan). Schor assumed office in 2018.

City council

The Lansing City Council is the city's primary legislative body. It is responsible for adopting the city budget, approving mayoral appointees, levying taxes, and making or amending city laws, policies, and ordinances.[3]

The city council is made up of eight members elected to four-year terms. Four members are elected from the city's four wards, while the other four members are elected at large.[4]

Budget

The city's budget process operates by fiscal years running from July 1 to June 30 of the next year. The mayor is in charge of submitting a proposed budget to the city council by the fourth Monday in March. The city council must adopt the budget for the next fiscal year by the third Monday in May of each year.[5][6]
