Jerry Laws (Republican Party) ran for election to the U.S. House to represent California's 8th Congressional District. He lost in the primary on March 3, 2020.

Laws unsuccessfully sought election to the U.S. Senate from California as a Republican candidate in 2016.^[1] He also unsuccessfully ran as a Republican candidate for District 33 of the California State Assembly in 2014.

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated California's U.S. Senate race as safely Democratic. California's U.S. Senate seat was open following the retirement of incumbent Barbara Boxer (D). Thirty-four candidates filed to run to replace Boxer, including seven Democrats, 12 Republicans, and 15 third-party candidates. Two Democrats, Kamala Harris and Loretta Sanchez, defeated the other 32 candidates to advance to the general election. Harris won the general election.^[2][3]

The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7, 2014. John Coffey (D) and Jay Obernolte (R) defeated Michelle Ambrozic (R), Art Bishop (R), Robert J. "Bob" Buhrle (R), Robert Larivee (R), Jerry J. Laws (R), Scott Markovich (R), Rick Roelle (R) and Brett Savage (R) in the blanket primary. Obernolte defeated Coffey in the general election.^[4][5][6]
