Two of five seats on the Jackson County School District school board in Mississippi were up for by-district general election on November 7, 2017. One incumbent filed to retain his seat. District 1 incumbent Glenn Dickerson won his bid for re-election unopposed. Newcomer Amy Dobson defeated fellow newcomer Dino Ray Vecchio for the open District 2 seat.[1][2]

The Jackson County School District school board consists of five members elected by district to staggered six-year terms. The general election for Districts 1 and 2 was November 7, 2017.[3]

Candidates were required to file for election by September 8, 2017.[4]

Jackson County School District is located in southern Mississippi in Jackson County. The county seat is Pascagoula. The county was home to an estimated 141,241 residents from 2010 to 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] The district was the seventh-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 9,383 students.[6]

Demographics

Jackson County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Mississippi in terms of higher education achievement from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 20.1 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 20.7 percent of Mississippi residents. The median household income in Jackson County was $48,406, while it was $39,665 for Mississippi. The county poverty rate was 16.1 percent, compared to the Mississippi's 20.8 percent.[5]
