Fifty-nine judges on Iowa's eight district courts sought retention election in the general election on November 8, 2016. If a majority of voters were in favor of keeping a judge in office, he or she was elected to a six-year term. The offices are nonpartisan and appeared on the ballot without a political party designation for any candidate.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • There are three levels of judges on the district courts: district judges, associate judges (including district associate, associate juvenile, and associate probate), and magistrates.
  • All of these judges except magistrates face retention elections after their initial appointment to office. Magistrates are an entirely appointed office filled by each county's magistrate appointing commission and do not face elections.
  • Each county is part of one of the eight state judicial districts; each district may have sub-districts.
  • These judges had each served at least one year on the bench following their initial appointment in order to be up for retention in 2016. They had to file with the Iowa Secretary of State by July 27, 2016, in order to appear on the ballot and retain their judgeship.

The district courts comprise the lowest level of the state's legal system and serve as trial courts. The Iowa Court of Appeals and Iowa Supreme Court, which hear the appeals from the district courts, also had justices up for retention election in 2016. Learn more about those elections here.

    Election rules

    Retention election

In Iowa's retention elections, voters are asked to decide whether a judge should remain in office. The judge is retained for a new term if a majority of voters answers with a "yes" vote. If the majority responds with a "no" vote, the judge is removed from the bench at the end of the term.[1]

According to a brochure released by the Iowa Judicial Branch, the purpose of Iowa's retention elections is to evaluate the competency of judges, as opposed to the popularity of their individual rulings.[1]
