David Lucas Sr. (Democratic Party) is a member of the Georgia State Senate, representing District 26. He assumed office on January 14, 2013. His current term ends on January 11, 2027.
Lucas (Democratic Party) ran for re-election to the Georgia State Senate to represent District 26. He won in the general election on November 5, 2024.
Biography
David Lucas Sr. was born in Peach County, GA and earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the Tuskegee Institute and a J.D. from Mercer University.[1] Lucas' career experience includes serving on the Georgia House of Representatives. He is a founder of 100 Black Men and the Al Lucas Scholarship Foundation. Lucas also received the Distinguished Service Award for Excellence in Political Activities from NYU. He was elected as state senator in 2012 and has been a member of the Senate Appropriations, Regulated Industries and Utilities, Economic Development and Tourism, Transportation, and Urban Affairs Committees.[2]

Elections for the Georgia State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on May 20, 2014, with a runoff election taking place where necessary on July 22, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7, 2014. Incumbent David E. Lucas, Sr. (D) defeated Miriam L. Paris in the Democratic primary and was unchallenged in the general election.[7][8][9]

Lucas ran in the 2012 election for Georgia State Senate District 26. Lucas and incumbent Miriam Paris defeated Irvin Martinez in the Democratic primary on July 31, 2012. Lucas and Paris faced each other in the runoff primary election on August 21, 2012. The runoff election between Lucas and incumbent Miriam Paris initially remained too close to call.[10] Paris conceded the race to Lucas.[11] Bobby Gale ran unopposed in the Republican primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[12][13] Lucas defeated Bobby Gale in the general election.[14]

2011
Lucas and Miriam Paris (D) received the most votes in the nonpartisan special election primary for Senate District 26 and proceeded to a runoff election on August 16, 2011. Republican Bobby Gale was eliminated in the primary.[15] District 26 covers Twiggs County and portions of Bibb, Houston and Wilkinson Counties.[16] Ultimately, Paris defeated Lucas in the runoff by a 12,950-10,220 margin.[17]

Lucas ran for re-election to the 139th District seat in 2010. He did not have any opposition in the July 20 primary and no one ran against him in the general election on November 2, 2010.[18]

Noteworthy events
On November 12, Lucas' wife confirmed he was in the hospital with COVID-19.[21] In March, Lucas, along with his Georgia State Senate colleagues, entered self-quarantine after State Sen. Brandon Beach tested positive for coronavirus.[22]
