David H. Coar was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He is served on senior status until his retirement on December 31, 2010.

Early life and education

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Coar graduated from Syracuse University with his bachelor's degree in 1964. Coar was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps in 1965, and in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 1965 to 1971. Coar received his J.D. degree from Loyola-Chicago Law School in 1969 before obtaining an L.L.M. from Harvard Law School in 1970.[1]

Professional career

Coar was a legal intern for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Legal Defense and Education Fund in New York City from 1970 to 1971. Coar entered private practice in Mobile, Alabama from 1971 to 1972 and then in Birmingham, Alabama from 1972 to 1974. Coar was an Associate Professor of Law and Associate Dean at DePaul University College of Law from 1974 to 1979 and again from 1982 to 1986. Coar was a U.S. Trustee Attorney from 1979 to 1982 United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. In 1985, Coar was a visiting professor for the College of William and Mary, Marshall-Wythe Law School in Virginia.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Northern District of Illinois

Coar was a federal bankruptcy court judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois from 1986 to 1994.[1]

On the recommendation of former U.S. Senator Carol Mosley Braun, Coar was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by President Bill Clinton on August 16, 1994, to a seat vacated by Ilana Rovner. Coar was confirmed by the Senate on October 6, 1994 on a Senate vote and received commission on October 7, 1994.[2] He assumed senior status on August 12, 2009. He retired on December 31, 2010.
