Donald Sternoff Beyer Jr. (Democratic Party) (also known as Don) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Virginia's 8th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2015. His current term ends on January 3, 2027.

Beyer (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. He declared candidacy for the 2026 election.[source]

He served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1998 and as ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2009 to 2013. In 2016, Beyer was one of 13 superdelegates from Virginia to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Beyer supported Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

In his first two terms in Congress, Beyer was assigned to the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. In the 116th Congress, he was re-assigned to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and assigned to the Committee on Ways and Means.[1]

Beyer earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Williams College. He owns automobile dealerships throughout Northern Virginia. He served as lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1998. He served as ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2009 to 2013.[2]

Incumbent Donald Sternoff "Don" Beyer was the only candidate to file for the Democratic primary for U.S. House Virginia District 8. Therefore, the Democratic primary scheduled for June 12, 2018, was canceled.[145]

Republican primary election

Thomas Oh was the only candidate to file for the Republican convention for U.S. House Virginia District 8. Therefore, the 8th Congressional District Republican Committee canceled the nominating convention scheduled for April 28, 2018.[146]

Beyer won election to the U.S. House to represent Virginia's 8th District.[149][150] Beyer defeated Virginia State Delegate Patrick Hope, former northern Virginia Urban League chief Lavern Chatman, Virginia State Senator Adam Ebbin, Alexandria Mayor William Euille, Virginia Tech professor Derek Hyra and radio talk-show host Mark Levine in the Democratic primary on June 10, 2014.[151]

Congressman Don Beyer is serving his fourth term as the U.S. Representative from Virginia’s 8th District, representing Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and parts of Fairfax County. He serves as the Chairman of Congress' Joint Economic Committee, and also serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, and on the House Committee on Science Space and Technology, where he chairs the Space Subcommittee. He is a Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition's Climate Change Task Force. Previously, he was the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1998 and was Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein under President Obama. He has spent four decades building his family business in Northern Virginia after a summer job at a car dealership in 1974. He is a graduate of Williams College and Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. He was named a Presidential Scholar by President Lyndon Johnson.
