2014
On his campaign website, Hernandez highlighted the following issues:[2]
Infrastructure
- Excerpt: "With our current boom comes increased sales and property tax revenue. We must wisely invest those increased revenues in our neglected infrastructure and insure we capture our share of the growing regional tax base. In that way we can keep the effective tax rate as low as possible and provide efficient quality services."
Streets
- Excerpt: "Even after a clear message from the voters last November, Council failed to come up with a plan for reconstruction of the other 65% of the residential streets. We need a real plan to reconstruct those neglected residential streets that taxpayers can afford. The street user fee should be reconsidered and a residential street reconstruction program developed that charges no more than 25% of the cost to the homeowner. It is currently 90%."
Water
- Excerpt: "We must explore every opportunity to expand our water sources in order to serve our industrial and residential growth. Water equals jobs. Industrial desalination, groundwater storage, conservation, reuse and other sources must all be considered. There is no reason except of lack of political will to prevent insuring there enough water for our future growth."
Taxes
- Excerpt: "We have to invest in our City, but we must do it effectively and efficiently to keep taxes and utilities down as low as possible. Decisions that encourage residents to lower use but raise rates represent poor planning. These are the internal services and structure that are needed to attract the industries, businesses and the jobs and families that come with them. Give me the opportunity to provide the leadership that will attract them to Corpus Christi."
