Fun things to do around SE OK, SW AR, NE TX, NW LA?

Boyfriend and I will be observing the total solar eclipse in Broken Bow, Oklahoma on April 8th and then driving around for about a week before I need to catch a train in Texarkana. I'm figuring a 500 mile radius or so from either of those places is a good place for our wandering - so that's east Texas, southwest Arkansas, northwest Louisiana. What places in that area do you love? Where should we steer clear of? [more inside]

Road Trip! Suggested eats and roadside attractions?

It appears as though my wife and I will be driving from Toronto, Canada to San Diego between Christmas and New Year's because that's what life presents you with sometimes. We're on a timetable so we can't stop at every cool thing, but it would be nice to find some scenic spots and local chow that isn't Denny's. Route and other details inside. [more inside]

Where to rent near Tulsa, Oklahoma

Apartment hunting in Tulsa. We're tired of the Alaskan winters and are contemplating a move to Tulsa this fall. We've got a couple of friends in the area and a job that is lined up (downtown area) but we don't know what areas of the city to look for apartments/houses. We've heard good things about Broken Arrow, but not much else. We'd like to be close to shopping, entertainment, biking/walking trails, and preferably a dog park nearby. We'd like to avoid horrible traffic if possible but don't mind a longish commute if necessary.

How can I help my friend?

My friend has no insurance and very limited funds, and is having some pretty funky health problems. He needs low-cost to no-cost medical attention in Oklahoma. Any ideas? So far, I've come up with this. Any ideas? I know that he *could* go to an ER, but being saddled with a $3000 dollar bill is not going to help him out of his financial problems anytime soon. What's the best source for info on the first "Oklahoma" authors?

I'm looking for a journal article or book that addresses the first writers active in Oklahoma territory (before statehood in 1907). I've tried Google Scholar, but perhaps my Google-fu isn't as strong as it could be, because I'm not coming up with very good results. I'm trying to find a source that deals with the first authors (Native American, white, black, whomever) known to have published letters, articles, poems, or fiction in the territory that would come to be known as Oklahoma. Thanks!
