Looking for "nugget ice" in NYC

I've got a super-pregnant buddy who has been craving ice. Specifically, the "Sonic-style" crunchy ice that's nice to chew. Any leads on where to find such a thing in New York City? She lives in Queens, so it'd be nice to be able to grab a big old bag of it somewhere (so it could survive the subway journey) and surprise her with it.

Sunday Night Jazz in NY

I have a date with my visiting from out of town stepsister this Sunday and she wants to go see some live jazz but nothing too avant guard. Please help me look cool by recommending somewhere we could go. She's a music teacher and plays a couple instruments so unlike me she probably knows good from bad. Nice cocktails would be a plus and ideally not to far out as she's staying at a hotel in Times Square.

NYC subway trains stink, mold?

I feel sick every time I get on to nyc subway trains. The N train is constantly stinky like urine and mcdonalds and feet, that triggered my multiple chemical sensitivity badly. I noticed 7 train usually have very fresh air which does not trigger my symptoms, as well as #6 train. R train is much better than N train, and E train is much better than F train. I want to know what caused these nasty stinky trains? Are all odor caused by mold? Btw: I can't tolerate PATH smell as well. I'm so confused people in these trains seem do not feel anything. Any information or comment are welcome.

Best place to take an improv class in NYC for a nonactor?

I'd like to take an improv class for various reasons unrelated to acting -- to think better on my feet, to be more spontaneous, less shy in groups, etc. I live in NYC where I suspect even an intro class will be filled with experienced actor types. This is fine, I guess, but I wonder if anyone can recommend a place where regular people like me might be in the mix. I'm also in my 40s, which makes me feel like I'll be too old, but I'll hopefully get over that soon enough. Thanks for any ideas.

What's a reasonable price range for airfare from New York to Tokyo?

I'm traveling with a friend to Tokyo next year, May 24th to June 6th. I've had Orbitz, Expedia, Kayak and Skyscanner on heavy rotation for three weeks and the best price I can find for travel time shorter than 24 hours is about $1500 round-trip. I'd rather not get scolded by our friends for paying too much, and Googling "nyc to tokyo airfare price range" is giving me the equivalent of hearing "usual and customary" from my insurance company, so I am turning to MeFites for help. Possible pertinent details below the fold. [more inside]

What to do with teens on one-day visit to Manhattan?

I think I'll take my kids (18 yr. old daughter & her boyfriend; 16 yr. old son) down to NYC for just the day this Sunday. Kids have spent almost no time in NYC and not since they were little, so it's pretty much brand new to them. I only get to go about once every 5 years, so I'm not very familiar. Son is video game enthusiast, Minecraft, EDM, young for his age, geeky kid. Daughter likes everything and will be gung-ho no matter what we do. Neither of them is particularly into museums. I myself just like walking along the streets, taking in the sights, people-watching, window shopping. I'm thinking walking around in Central Park, maybe the zoo. Or maybe checking out the highline. But what else should we do with about 5 or 6 hours? Also, we're driving down, using a rental car. What's the best part of town to park in, and what kind of parking situation would be best?

NYC Bakery Filter

I'm here in NYC and searching for a bakery that I came across on a previous visit while wandering around the city right before a hurricane. I'm pretty sure it was in Midtown or the UWS. What's special about this bakery is that everything they sell was made that day, and what's left over at the end of the day is always donated. Based on that description, can you help me? All my extensive searching has yielded no matches.

NYC to Princeton University: take a bus or NJ Transit?

I am looking to travel to from NYC to Princeton on a Thursday - early afternoon. I am trying to decide between the two options. Both are priced about the same, and the slight time difference in trips does not matter much to me, as I will not be pressed for time. Both Penn Station and Port Authority are about equally easy for me to get to. I will carry one suitcase and a backpack. Has anyone had experience taking either a bus (e.g., Suburban Transit) or the NJ Transit train to Princeton Junction and transferring to the Dinky? Is one option much better than the other? I suppose my criteria for "better" include: more pleasant, easier to navigate the stations/terminals, and with a drop off closer to campus. Thanks!

Re(le)nting in NYC

This will take a bit of time as I will go into some details but bear with me please.I have seen the earlier threads but the kinda of questions I had are, sort of, very different. I am in early 30's and have just moved to NYC. I am by myself now and expect my wife to join me after December. Currently, am in a hotel provided by my employer and can have this for a month more. My office is in mid-town manhattan (near grand central) and one client whom I would be visiting often is in long island city. I plan to use subway extensively for my travel. So, I have started my house hunting now. Q1: Is this the right time or am I too late and I should beg my employer to give me couple of more weeks? [more inside]

I'm not looking for books about cultural "scenes" or specific events/short periods.
