Looking for a Mac notes/todo app with a specific requirement
I currently use Roam Research to keep notes and track my todos, but I use about 1% of Roam's total capability and am paying more than I'd like for it ($15/mo). I need simple parent/child toggle lists and todo items and that's it! [more inside]

Too-narrow grab regions on MacOS
Mac users: for me, edges and separators for resizing windows (especially vertical separators between panels, but often also the outer edges of ordinary windows) are frustratingly narrow in width and difficult to grab. I've tried TinkerTool but doesn't seem to make any difference. Are there any other apps, extensions, setting, or something that would make the grab edges/response regions wider? [more inside]
Updating from MacOS Catalina 10 ---> Sonoma 14
I have been (perhaps overly) conservative regarding system updates on my 2017 Intel Core5 iMac with a 1TB onboard SSD and 8GB of RAM, but am now finding some issues cropping up such as Safari not functioning entirely properly. I am currently running Catalina 10.15.7 and am considering updating to the current system Sonoma 14. Are there any potential issues or advice I should be aware of before I proceed? [more inside]
How can I screenshot a film on MacOS/iOS?
Over the past twenty years, I've purchased 1037 movies via the iTunes store (or whatever Apple calls it these days). I'm now getting into art. I would dearly love to screenshot some of my favorite scenes so that I can use them as reference for drawing/painting. By default, Apple prevents screenshots of DRM content. I can (and do) bypass this using BitTorrent to download copies of media I legally own, then screenshotting via VLC. I'm wary of this method for a variety of reasons. Is there a way to grab a goddamn screenshot in MacOS or iOS without resorting to "piracy"? [more inside]
Family member permitted remote Mac access to stranger on phone
A family member allowed a stranger on the phone "into" their computer, thinking that the stranger was a legitimate rep for $big_internet_provider. They had access for hours, as far as I know. It is powered off, now.
It's a Mac, running something between macos 10.15 and 12. [more inside]

Help with Macbook... 11.7.10 MacOS Big Sur
A friend has a MacBook Air running 11.7.10 MacOS Big Sur. It is repeatedly asking her for her Admin Password. Her Apple ID password is not working. Does that OS have separate passwords for admin and Apple ID? If so, what can she do if she's forgotten it? Under Users her account is only one listed. Thanks.
Decruft a 2009-era Mac Pro
I have an old Mac Pro which is still plenty powerful for the applications I use it for -- plenty of memory, disk space, and processor power. However, the operating system responsiveness has slowed down a lot. Can I de-cruft or otherwise restore it to its old snappy responsiveness? [more inside]
Just let me manage my music: iOS and iPhone 2023 edition
I have an iPhone 15 Pro with 256GB of storage. I have a lot of music. I want something that should be very simple: to copy a lot of music to the phone, without any cloud features or other BS, and to play the music back with – and this is very important – the ability to "scrobble" music to Last.fm.
For some reason, this seems infinitely harder than it should be. [more inside]
Quick display settings change on MacOS.
I use my MacBook Pro for presentations at school and use the Screen Mirroring function to do this. But when I do this and the screen mirrors to the projector, the resolution automatically changes, which I have to change back, and doing this a dozen times in a lecture is a pain. How can I keep the MacBook from switching the resolution when I mirror the screen? (Or alternately, is there a keyboard shortcut to quickly switch resolutions?) [more inside]

How can I stop YouTube showing me links to suggested videos?
Sometimes I need to look at a YouTube video that is not embedded in a web page, because a link sends me to YouTube itself. When that happens, the regular YouTube page contains not just the video I want to watch: it contains a long list of other videos suggested by YouTube. They are intensely distracting for me – I can't stop noticing them, and merely looking at them destroys my concentration even if I never click on any of them. Is there any extension for Safari (or another browser) that will remove those suggested videos completely? [more inside]
Trying to set up an old Macbook Air
I have an older Macbook Air (2013, I believe) that I freshly installed the OS on (Mountain Lion). When I try to update to a later OS, it tells me it "cannot access the App Store". When I google this, none of the solutions work. I just want to be able to run Google Docs and use this as a writing machine. More issues inside. [more inside]
Music App to compare how scales/arpeggios/chords sound in context?

How do I project from streaming services?
I’ve been curious about projectors for years and bought an inexpensive one yesterday. I set it up and connected it to my network and could project a YouTube playlist easily. There are more hoops to jump through to project Netflix or Amazon Prime - the two streaming services I use primarily - and I’d appreciate some information on how to do this from an iPad, iPhone or a MacBook Pro running Plex Media Server. [more inside]
How can I work out why my MacBook Air wants to spontaneously reboot?
Over the last few weeks I've noticed my Mac (Intel MacBook Air mid 2020 running the Ventura 13.4, FWIW) will periodically attempt to close down all open apps and reboot. It's definitely rebooting and not just going to sleep - details inside. I'm looking for some pointers to help me work out why. [more inside]
How do I make fonts (nicely) bigger on a Mac with an external monitor?
I have poor eyesight and need larger font sizes, including the OS titlebar and menu fonts, etc. My Macbook allows for making everything bigger on the laptop screen using the "scaling" option. But with my external monitor, I can't do this (unless I pick a blurry non-native resolution). Any suggestions? [more inside]
Conditional hybrid Retina display resolution
Enabling Retina display scaling settings on, say, 5K monitors (5120 x 2880) reduces that display's resolution to 2560 x 1440 pixels. Is the resolution change applied to everything the operating system renders on screen, or can it be set to conditionally render, say, very high-resolution images (like dense heatmaps or medical images) within a web browser or image viewer, using non-Retina 1:1 scaling? (More inside...) [more inside]
No updates
I have Office 2019 on my Macbook Pro M1. I use Word, Excel and sometimes Powerpoint. I'm fed up of all the 'enhancements' that come with updates, like the Modern commenting function, and want to stop updating at least as long as I have this laptop. Are there any potential issues that I need to be aware of, other than the annoying update reminder? Word is really the one that matters.
Options for emulating/virtualizing older Mac OS X?
I have an aging MacBook Air that is running Mojave, the last macOS to support 32-bit apps. I would like to continue to run some 32-bit games and music apps that haven't been updated in a long time, while also getting security updates. Are there ways to run Mojave in a VM? [more inside]

Can you make macOS Finder show image titles & captions in gallery view?

Mac OS 12.5 scrolling bug in photos
Any idea on how to fix this display bug in the Photos app on Mac OS 12.5?
After opening the Photos application and scrolling through the library, the machine freezes for a few seconds and then starts flicking with a magenta/pinkish color, while no longer scrolling.
The computer itself is new, one of the models released in the last year and the OS is up to date. The library around 32K images.

Transferring from 2012 Mac to a 2022 Mac
Will be getting one of those new M2 Macbook Pros next week. My current computer is a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro, running 10.12.6. under the Sierra version.
Am I looking at any sort of problems transferring from such an old Mac (10 years baby!) to a spanking brand new Mac?
Adding a script to MacOS 101
Both my personal and work laptops have the M1 chip and I use the HyperDrive 10-in-1 hub to connect two external displays to them. This means a couple times a day I unplug a laptop from its power supply and the hub and plug the other laptop into its power supply and the hub.
Plugging in the laptop comes with some lag in the connections to the monitors and my open applications end up on the wrong display. Can I create a shortcut or a script that will let me move an app and its windows to a specific display and maximize it in the window? [more inside]
How to get the most deleted off a Mac without factory reset?
I've left dealing with returning my old, replaced computer to my employer to the last minute and now I'm running into an issue I hadn't considered: they've put a firmware password on so that I can't just do a factory reset and wipe it before I give it back. What should I do to ensure I get the most I can deleted with this critical path blocked? [more inside]

Keeping a window on top
I'd like to keep a particular window on top of my desktop. I'm running macOS Monterey. I'd prefer a universal solution but if there's one specific to Chrome, that's the app in which I'm trying to keep a window on top. (I don't want it to keep every window on top, only one I designate).
How can I read or import an old Microsoft email account on my Mac?
I have a folder from an old Microsoft Entourage for Mac account. It's from an old backup drive I haven't touched in years. I'd like to browse those old emails, but I don't own any Microsoft apps, and Apple's Mail app can't import them even though the database is a .mbox file. I've tried opening the file in a text editor, but most of the data is jumbled. Any ideas? [more inside]
Seeking an Uncheat-able iOS 15 Intermittent Lockout Timer
When I’m using my computer devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone) I lose all sense of time and sit too long. I limit internet access with Freedom, which works on all Apple platforms as well as Windows & Android. For limiting hardware access, I only have a macOS solution. Dejal Software’s Time Out blanks the screen and locks out the keyboard on my schedule, and survives a reboot. I want this kind of hardware limit for iOS 15. [more inside]

Mp3 player/music editor that deletes spoken words and plays music
Is anyone aware of a podcast/mp3 player that will automatically take an mp3 file and then either skip/ignore (or delete) spoken-word/conversation in that mp3 and only play the music. MacOS "Relocated Items" after every update - can't I make it stop?
With every Mac OS update for the last year, I get the "Relocated Items" on my desktop. I understand basically what this is, and that it's pretty safe to delete. But it's the SAME thing appearing there after EVERY update, even after I removed it last time. Isn't there some way to, say, find the original pre-relocated file and remove it permanently? Comparing folder contents using Terminal in MacOS
In MacOS, I'm comparing the contents of folders on several external drives. In this particular situation I know identically-named files will be identical, so I only need to know how folders differ based on the names of the files inside them (which are inside lots of subfolders). I'm using the Terminal command diff -rq "pathname 1" "pathname 2". However, it's proceeding very slowly and seems to be looking for differences inside the files themselves. So is this really the command I should be using? [more inside]
