Best way to learn Python online (free or cheap)?
I am looking to learn Python! What are the best (ideally free or cheap) online resources for this? My schedule is not very flexible but I do best with structure and hands-on learning so self-paced but easy to access courses with lots of exercises and chances to try things would be much appreciated. Super human learning and organization
I am starting a job that will be fast paced, require me to learn an entirely new domain, and track and organize a lot of tasks and a lot of people. As I have gotten older, my memory and processing speed isn't what it used to be. I have never been super detail oriented. What tips, tricks, tools, and techniques do you use to keep your mind sharp, learn new things, and keep everything organized? Answers ranging from sleeping more or using a giant Google Sheet or Anki cards or leveraging ChatGPT are all welcome.

First learn this, next this, then that!
Hi!
I have a software development project idea I want to bring to life. I've read a couple of books on programming and cobbled enough code together to consider myself an advanced beginner, but I realize I need to build up new and more advanced technical skills/knowledge if I want the project to have a chance at success.
I'm looking for someone I can pay who can understand where I'm at skill-wise and the technical requirements of the project I want to get launched and advise me in what areas I need to improve and maybe even point out some helpful learning resources for me.
Does anyone know where can I find someone like that? Thanks!
The opposite of aphantasia
What skills would be interesting/useful to develop, given a very vivid imagination/memory/body awareness? And are there any guides for how to go about training those skills? Athletes frequently "practice" by imagining in great detail the sensations of correctly doing their sport, and this is quite effective. [more inside]

What's the best way to learn intermediate chess?
I've been watching The Queen's Gambit and it made me want to try chess again. I know how all the pieces move, castling/en passant, etc, but I lack any strategic understanding, openings/closings, etc. Where do I go from here? Online/digital sources preferred, but books are cool too.

History of education, teaching and schools
I want to know how teaching evolved, as much as we (anthropologists/historians) know. What I've found on the internet seems to imply that schools didn't exist before 17th (?) Century and teachers in those had no training, just excellent exam results (like 14 year old Laura in Little House on the Prairie, c 1880s). [more inside]
Want 2 websites. Got 4-5 months & a small budget. Learn, hire, both?
I have a small budget and 4-5 months to build a couple of websites. One for a small business and the other for personal interest that could become a small business. Both are probably going to be pretty simple, but I'm a complete novice. In fact, I purchased a Wordpress site (because every time I liked the look of a website it seemed to be Wordpress) with "support" thinking I could figure out the rest; but, I need more foundational knowledge to orient myself to even know what to ask in the chat window. What steps would you recommend to this novice? More in the extended. [more inside]

Any pointers of a good, economical place to study English?
I'm looking for a place where my GF, a Chinese national, could study English full time without breaking the bank. Doesn't have to be the best school ever, but ideally staffed by competent enough native English speakers. All the programs I know are in America, Australia and the like and are quite expensive, relatively speaking. [more inside]

Help me teach myself partial differential equations
After a long slog, I'm finally one credit short of graduating! I have a math elective left, and the most efficient/affordable way to do this is by earning credit for Calculus IV (a.k.a. PDEs) through a placement exam in about three weeks. But it's been a few years since I've done any math in earnest, and working through the textbook is proving to be a nightmare. Please recommend some resources for self-teaching! [more inside]

I'm looking for recommendations for the best free language app with no lessons locked or at least very few locked lessons.

Musical mefites lend me your gadgets! Learning songs on a digital piano.
I have access to a digital piano (Kawai CN24) and wouldn't mind learning to play a few songs. I do not want to learn to read music. Memorization/repetition of a few easy to moderate songs is the goal. What digital or electrical tools are there that might help me accomplish this. Ideally, I'm thinking android or windows tablet applications or maybe a cheaper piece of musical hardware that somehow integrates with the hardware/MIDI outs/ins on the piano in question. How to Familiarize Myself With Words I Already Know
I have a list of several hundred words which I often forget to use in conversation or in writing (I compiled it by jotting down words I've found myself fishing for). I know their definitions, but I'd like to better familiarize myself with them, so they're more in the "front of my mind" and I don't have to eternally fish for them (e.g. astringent, banal, lascivious, subsume, criteria, duress, affectation). How should I go about becoming fluent in Chinese?
TLDR: I'm in a serious relationship with a girl whose whole family is native Shanghainese speakers. They are ok Mandarin speakers. If I'm gonna be with her long-term (seems likely), I want to have a relationship with her family and feel like I need to learn either Mandarin (or Shanghainese -- open to that). So I need strategies to get as fluent as possible as efficiently as possible. I can spend whatever I need to on this. Can't go live in China for a while, though can at some point in the distant future maybe. I live in NYC. More after the jump. [more inside]
I want to learn new life skills. Starting points?
I am looking to learn or become better at skills that would make life easier for me (fixing a car, cooking, DIY, things like that). To that end, I'd like to learn of some starting activities for various skills which could act as training wheels so I don't feel overwhelmed by all of the things there are to learn. Enjoyable hobbies (like chess, drawing, etc.) are more than welcome as well. An example of what I am looking for plus some extra details inside. [more inside]
Help us with a good title and decor for 4th grade science fair project
We can't figure out a good title for my daughter's Science Fair Project. The school wants the 4th grade children to basically do the whole project at home with guidance from the parents.
My daughter's experiment is on why apples turn brown and she is learning about why the lemon juice worked (learning about acids and bases, etc.)
The poster board we will use will have a title on it. The teacher wants us to think of a good title, and it does not necessarily have to be the question, "Why do apples turn brown". It can be a clever, or interesting title that goes with the experiment. At first we thought about, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." But then we thought it was too long, and it also might be presumed that her project is about apples and how they are healthy. [more inside]
Daveyyyy! Davey Crochet! (Get it? If you pronounce it phonetically...?)
I can crochet... sorta. I have made mittens and slippers and hats and scarves, I even made a Dispicible Me Minion hat and scarf for my step son (impressing the pants off of him), but they are all winged. I have no idea about stitches and I have no idea what I am actually doing. Things just seem to work out (so far). I want to learn how to crochet for real and make awesome things. Progressively Challenging Hindi Literature for the Novice Hindi Reader

Help me find the right "learn Spanish" app!
I spend a lot of time sitting around waiting, with my iPhone. I also spend a fair amount of time having very similar conversations, in my very poor conversational spanish, with native-speakers who (usually due to tragic life circumstances) lack education in their own language. What I don't do is expand my vocabulary or learn proper grammar. As a consequence, while I can usually understand the gist of what people say and make myself generally understood, I don't understand the details, can't express myself precisely, and I'm not getting any better at any of those tasks.
