Gettin' fired in the morning. What do?
OK, MetaFilter. It's come to this. I'm less than 3 months into a new (white-collar, tech) job, and after getting feedback from new boss over the past few weeks about slow throughput, today's 1-on-1 was unequivocally the end. He told me the first 90 days are about figuring out whether it's a fit, and it's not a fit. But... [more inside]
Am I being irrational about fear of being let go at work?
I've been at my company for a few years, in a niche mid-senior level role that was created just for me to assist with a variety of projects that were very specific to a certain type of program/tech that we use for clients. The rest of my department is engaged in very complex work that I am not and have never been good at. The niche tech and programs that I specialize in however are sort of being phased out as the industry and technology changes, and I am struggling to keep up with the changes, as well as with the incredibly complex data/engineering work that the rest of my team does. More mistakes at work - getting scared now
Ive done a couple of posts about mistakes at work. They have become repetitive and it's got to the point this week my manager got very annoyed with me and is now reviewing all my postings at the end of each day. She told me it's not acceptable for me to keep making the same mistakes after being in the job for just under a year. [more inside]

How do you personally cope with being laid off?
I’m frustrated as I have been laid off again because of the economy. I do wonder if there is a chance that layoffs are a way to get rid of people that aren’t great but not bad enough to fire. [more inside]
Care and feeding of professional network. Difficulty level: Fired

I got fired after a month. What should I do?
I got fired after a month in a start up company because they decided that they wanted someone with more experience. The role was very new and I was considered the guinea pig before they would hire more people in the same title. [more inside]
How do I explain getting fired / managed out
I currently work for a company that has a great reputation in my industry and great financials. People are jealous that I work here.
But very soon I will be given the choice of resigning or being fired.
This has ever happened to me in my 25 year career. How do I explain this to other people and employers? [more inside]
Fired during the pandemic with a baby on the way
Hello, I'm a software developer. Up until yesterday, I would have told you that my life was going great - I had a good job and my wife is seven months pregnant with a child that we're both very excited about. Yesterday I was suddenly and unexpectedly fired. I'm not so much looking for job search advice as I am advice about how to manage how freaked out I am about this situation. [more inside]
How to deal with references after termination?

Between interview and job offer I quit my current job. Do I bring it up?
I've been at one job for a few months but it was a bad fit from the start. So I started interviewing elsewhere. In between the interviews and the job offer, I voluntarily resigned from my current job in exchange for severance. Company policy is anyone who takes severance is NOT eligible for re-hire.
I'm worried that the earlier end hire date, and no re-hire, will come back on the background check. The potential employer might conclude that I was fired for cause and rescind the offer. Do I stay silent and hope for the best, or do I preemptively mention my resignation to the new employer? [more inside]

Getting fired, no savings - should I take this unexciting job?
Pretty sure I'm getting fired in early December. I don't have any savings, and just got a job offer for something I'm not super excited about, but will definitely pay the bills and allow me to save while I live at home. MeFites, what's the play here? [more inside]
handling stress during a performance improvement plan
Last week I was placed on a 30-day performance improvement plan. Obviously I'm working day and night to fulfill the specifics of my PIP, but I have depression, anxiety, and PTSD, as well as a precarious financial situation, and the stress of looming unemployment and possible homelessness is making it hard to cope. How can I manage the stress and make a concrete plan to get myself out of this situation? (snowflakes inside) [more inside]

Dealing with the shame of getting fired
I realize that this is a pretty privileged position to be in, but in my entire life, I've never really been in a position where I've felt ashamed of myself for making a mistake. I've made small mistakes that didn't really matter, as everyone does, but no big mistakes. Until yesterday. [more inside]
Does complaints for sexual harrassment result in victim getting fired?
So I am a guy getting harassed by another guy at work, and by the way, this is a "professional work environment". A couple months ago this guy comes up to me and starts making comments like "you are looking good today" and just stares at me for a prolonged period of time with a smirk. And he has said other things too that make me uncomfortable. Now, I do what I can to avoid him but he is trying to gain rapport with me, but I just ignore him; so now it has been 3 months. I was initially going to talk with my boss (the CFO) and let him know what this guy has been doing. But, I have asked this question before on this website, and someone pointed out that I could get fired for making the complaint even though I am the victim. And then I did more research on the internet where victims of sexual harassment can actually get fired for making a complaint. I am just wondering how often does this happen, and if anyone has ever seen it happen before?

ask to resign or accept my layoff? How to spin it in interviews?
I took a job at a preschool and was just let go a few days before the 90 day probationary period ended. Before this, I was temping as an administrative assistant. My plan is to go back to the temp agency. Will it look better to prospective employers if I resign, or does it even matter since I'm going into a very different field of work? I'm mostly worried about prospective employers calling the preschool to confirm employment ; asking if I'm eligible for rehire, and hearing "no". [more inside]
How far does reference checking go?
I was fired from a job like 5 years ago, and I am thinking of just saying that I was laid off if I am asked “why I left”. I am not planning to give any references from that company but I heard that sometimes they will call the company and fish around for a reference without you knowing. [more inside]
There are only bad options; which is the best one?
Out of work, unemployment benefits finished, and I feel like I need to choose between "take the crappy job that doesn't pay well" and "hold out for something better while temping and living off my savings." The catch? I've been fired twice in the last three years, so my employment history doesn't look great on paper even if I'm a good interview. What's the best job search strategy? [more inside]
How to stop obsessive thinking about getting fired?

Am I crazy or are they purposely ignoring me?
I feel insane for even posting about this, but my (ever-so-slight) anxiety is getting the best of me!
Around two months ago, I accepted a job with a great company. It is what they are calling a "W2 contractor" position. So, I'm a W2 employee where they take care of deducting taxes from my paycheck for me, but I don't receive any health benefits, PTO, etc. etc. I'm paid hourly, and my hourly wage is well above the norm, I'm guessing to help offset the lack of benefits. Some weeks I work 40 hours, others I work 15 or so... it depends on the workload available. Essentially, it's kind of like being a part time employee. [more inside]
I'm on disability, and was told to resign. I feel I was verbally abused.
I'm on disability and am on SSI, for auditory processing disorder and bipolar among other things. The boss at my retail store told me he doesn't want me anymore, and said things that i view as harassment, especially since they knew i was disabled when they hired me. My self-esteem is shattered and my depression is back in large part because of these events. I'd like to hear some ideas as to how to proceed with this and what my options are since I feel I was abused. Should I get a lawyer/etc? [more inside]
explaining that you were fired
Does admitting in an interview that you were fired ever turn out to be a job offer in the end?
Especially if it involves getting fired from a job 4 years ago or even longer?
I do want to tell the truth, but telling the truth does not seem to be practical, since companies are ready to write you off very quickly with such an answer. I once admitted it in an interview and the hiring manager looked shocked all of a sudden, left the room, and said that the next person who was going to interview me was too busy and had a work emergency.
I think that admitting being fired is only safe when you have good experience and credentials, so that employers would forgive you for a little blemish in your career.

Why can't I get/keep a job?
I did get fired from the job I wrote about in my last question. But then I got another job, serving at a gastropub type place. Everything was going fine, or so I thought. I went in today to take my menu test, and instead, I was told that it wasn't going to work out. They need someone with more experience. [more inside]
I think I'm going to get fired: Restaurant edition!
I just finished training as a food runner/expo at a high volume, fine dining restaurant in LA. I am not doing well, and although I've been scheduled for five shifts for the next two weeks, I feel like I'm doing a shitty job, the managers are always on my ass, and I'm getting carpal tunnel syndrome from the heavy plates. I'm obviously looking for a new job, and I'm on the verge of asking for my old job back, but if the hive mind has any advice on how to salvage this situation, please help me out. [more inside]

Dismissed from full time position, but HR offers to reclassify
I was recently dismissed from a new full time job less than 3 months after starting it.
A recent note from HR has kindly offered to reclassify the position as a temporary one if it would help me. Is this wise? It sounds like I can go forward without the stigma of being fired but will it affect unemployment, or anything else I don't know about?
(It was a bit of a shock, tho it wasn't a great fit. Wisconsin is an at-wlll state and there were no issues of misconduct. )

I've just been fired. What do I do next?
I was just terminated after 89 days from a job that I moved 550 miles to accept. I have no savings -- they were spent on the move -- and two weeks' severance pay (about $1,300). I have no family or friends in this city. What are my next moves? [more inside]
What do to after losing job in Ohio: health care, unemployement, etc..
A good friend has been fired from her low paid private school job in the Cleveland Ohio area and is looking for advice on what she needs to do in the short term.
She works in a somewhat hard to find work in field (music therapy for children)
She's in her mid 40s and is single, no dependents.
Her health insurance will run out at the end of this month.
Her salary is perhaps 30k, maybe lower.
She has no savings but family in the area who will likely help w/ rent, etc.. but they are limited as well in what they can do financially to help her as they are retired on a fixed income.
What are concrete steps she should take in order to make sure she has:
health care (medicaid? ACA exchange insurance since she had a qualified life event?)
unemployment insurance (what separation reason should she ask for for her employer NOT to fight this?)
food stamps (if they exist any more for single people)
links to possible sources of jobs in her field
Anything else?
Thanks!

Might get fired! how do I plan?
The CEO of my company is kind of... mercurial, and given to dramatic gestures. I am... not in a great position to get a new job. Help me plan for the worst? [more inside]
