Gettin' fired in the morning. What do?

OK, MetaFilter. It's come to this. I'm less than 3 months into a new (white-collar, tech) job, and after getting feedback from new boss over the past few weeks about slow throughput, today's 1-on-1 was unequivocally the end. He told me the first 90 days are about figuring out whether it's a fit, and it's not a fit. But... [more inside]

Am I being irrational about fear of being let go at work?

I've been at my company for a few years, in a niche mid-senior level role that was created just for me to assist with a variety of projects that were very specific to a certain type of program/tech that we use for clients. The rest of my department is engaged in very complex work that I am not and have never been good at. The niche tech and programs that I specialize in however are sort of being phased out as the industry and technology changes, and I am struggling to keep up with the changes, as well as with the incredibly complex data/engineering work that the rest of my team does. More mistakes at work - getting scared now

Between interview and job offer I quit my current job. Do I bring it up?

I've been at one job for a few months but it was a bad fit from the start. So I started interviewing elsewhere. In between the interviews and the job offer, I voluntarily resigned from my current job in exchange for severance. Company policy is anyone who takes severance is NOT eligible for re-hire. I'm worried that the earlier end hire date, and no re-hire, will come back on the background check. The potential employer might conclude that I was fired for cause and rescind the offer. Do I stay silent and hope for the best, or do I preemptively mention my resignation to the new employer? [more inside]

Does complaints for sexual harrassment result in victim getting fired?

So I am a guy getting harassed by another guy at work, and by the way, this is a "professional work environment". A couple months ago this guy comes up to me and starts making comments like "you are looking good today" and just stares at me for a prolonged period of time with a smirk. And he has said other things too that make me uncomfortable. Now, I do what I can to avoid him but he is trying to gain rapport with me, but I just ignore him; so now it has been 3 months. I was initially going to talk with my boss (the CFO) and let him know what this guy has been doing. But, I have asked this question before on this website, and someone pointed out that I could get fired for making the complaint even though I am the victim. And then I did more research on the internet where victims of sexual harassment can actually get fired for making a complaint. I am just wondering how often does this happen, and if anyone has ever seen it happen before?

ask to resign or accept my layoff? How to spin it in interviews?

I took a job at a preschool and was just let go a few days before the 90 day probationary period ended. Before this, I was temping as an administrative assistant. My plan is to go back to the temp agency. Will it look better to prospective employers if I resign, or does it even matter since I'm going into a very different field of work? Am I crazy or are they purposely ignoring me?

I feel insane for even posting about this, but my (ever-so-slight) anxiety is getting the best of me! Around two months ago, I accepted a job with a great company. It is what they are calling a "W2 contractor" position. So, I'm a W2 employee where they take care of deducting taxes from my paycheck for me, but I don't receive any health benefits, PTO, etc. etc. I'm paid hourly, and my hourly wage is well above the norm, I'm guessing to help offset the lack of benefits. Some weeks I work 40 hours, others I work 15 or so... it depends on the workload available. Essentially, it's kind of like being a part time employee. [more inside]

explaining that you were fired

Does admitting in an interview that you were fired ever turn out to be a job offer in the end? Especially if it involves getting fired from a job 4 years ago or even longer? I do want to tell the truth, but telling the truth does not seem to be practical, since companies are ready to write you off very quickly with such an answer. I once admitted it in an interview and the hiring manager looked shocked all of a sudden, left the room, and said that the next person who was going to interview me was too busy and had a work emergency. I think that admitting being fired is only safe when you have good experience and credentials, so that employers would forgive you for a little blemish in your career.

Dismissed from full time position, but HR offers to reclassify

I was recently dismissed from a new full time job less than 3 months after starting it. A recent note from HR has kindly offered to reclassify the position as a temporary one if it would help me. Is this wise? It sounds like I can go forward without the stigma of being fired but will it affect unemployment, or anything else I don't know about? What do to after losing job in Ohio: health care, unemployement, etc..

A good friend has been fired from her low paid private school job in the Cleveland Ohio area and is looking for advice on what she needs to do in the short term. She works in a somewhat hard to find work in field (music therapy for children) She's in her mid 40s and is single, no dependents. Her health insurance will run out at the end of this month. Her salary is perhaps 30k, maybe lower. She has no savings but family in the area who will likely help w/ rent, etc.. but they are limited as well in what they can do financially to help her as they are retired on a fixed income. What are concrete steps she should take in order to make sure she has: health care (medicaid? ACA exchange insurance since she had a qualified life event?) unemployment insurance (what separation reason should she ask for for her employer NOT to fight this?) food stamps (if they exist any more for single people) links to possible sources of jobs in her field Anything else? Thanks!
