NZ to AUS service to provide NZ address and forward parcel to AUS

Are there any reliable services that will provide me with an NZ address to receive an online purchase from an NZ shop, and then forward that parcel to me in Australia. This is just for a one-off purchase, nothing ongoing is required. Thanks

Unorthodox retail?

I run a shop that lets you browse online but you must pick up in person (I do not ship and have no in-store browsing). There used to be a Toronto restaurant called The Atlantic that allowed you to pay what you wanted. In addition to selling bags, Freitag has a Shop Without Any Payment website for their customers to trade their bags. What are some other companies / people that have unusual / unique / unorthodox ways of doing business?

More books like these, please

Four books have really opened my eyes to the details of exactly how capitalism and imperialism transformed parts of the world for the worse: Sweetness and Power, Coffeeland, Late Victorian Holocausts, and The Making of the English Working Class. What I appreciated about them was that they told a historical story about a specific place with lots of detail, but also tied it to larger actions being taken to transform the world economy. What should I add to that part of my bookshelf? [more inside]

How to think critically about capitalism and allowance with kids?

Should I be buying a house in this mortgage climate? [UK]

So… we have an opportunity to buy a house for almost half a million pounds. We can put in 2/3 of that but have to borrow the rest as a mortgage. Should we be doing this right now? Or should we wait until mortgage rates settle down? Will they settle down? Not sure what I’m doing. So any advice appreciated.

Wage Theft Reality Check

I have a friend who works catering, both in tipped positions at events (server, chef, event manager) as well as at the home base (managing the warehouse of equipment, loading trucks). Going over their pay stub, it's now clear they're only being paid a tipped hourly (minimum) wage for both, and then having a tip applied over this base wage - sometimes at a different rate based on position. Historic trends in retail/shopping floor space

I'm trying to find a definitive article / book / blog on historic trends in retail/shopping floor space (per capita seems most meaningful) from 1100* to say 1995 (internet retail muddies waters too much). Is it possible to strive for recovery within our current society?

CW for hopelessness, discussions about capitalism, and general doom. I'm a trauma survivor and struggle with mental illness. Currently trying to rebuild my life and find some modicum of stability and joy. However, I keep running into the reality of what our current capitalist hellscape world is, and it leaves me hopeless and frozen around focusing on my recovery. Is it possible to recover within the daily violence of our system, at least to some degree? Is it possible to make my daily life tolerable—or better than that, decent—within our present circumstances? [more inside]

Who wrote about disability benefits as our safety net

Looking for a specific article and also general reading on related topics: The specific article I believe was a longer feature in the Washington Post (maybe???) Maybe 5 to 10 years ago(??) about a state (can't remember which state, maybe the states in general) funding people's Social Security disability application processes - to save themselves money on state welfare benefits, and I believe it touched on the social implication on 'incentivizing' (requiring??) people to label themselves as disabled in order to receive money required to live on? Should wages change when a part-time position becomes full-time?

The ethics of becoming a therapist

I've been strongly considering going back to school and studying to become a therapist. However, between reflecting on my own harmful experiences with therapists in the past, and the lit I've read on the field's systematic problems in terms of race, class, captialism; the moral issues with the power imbalance; and a worry that therapy doesn't actually help anyone in a meaningful way—I'm not so sure I want to pursue it. Businesses asking for the name of your employer? Why?

Twice this year, I have had the experience of a business I patronize asking me for the name of my employer. The first one was my dentist. The second was a car rental company. What is up with that? Why do they need to know this information? Do they have a legal right to this? Is there some kind of business reason for it? I find this practice rather aggravating and would like to be better informed so that I may do a better job of deflecting these inappropriate inquiries in the future. Many thanks in advance.

Our 12-year-old has expressed some interest in the history of socialism and communism. Settle a bet: Friend claimed that Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal" and "Making Money" where unique in the fantasy genre for dealing so much with the economics and " white collar" systems of a fantasy setting. I said that couldn't be true but couldn't think of any examples ( they abound in Sci-Fi, but we're talking wands and robes here, and the Baroque Cycle is only kind-of-fantasy).
