Seeking a powerful PC that can run Windows 7

For reasons that aren't relevant here, I need to configure a decently powerful PC that will run Windows 7 and can easily stream 4K video. I did some research and found what seems to be a reasonable computer on eBay. I would like a second opinion before I order the machine. [more inside]

God Made Mr. Eye, Man Made Mr. Camera

(That title was taped to the outside of the equipment locker at WKRC TV when I worked in the news department. I always wondered where it came from. In a way, it's so random. I'd pass it everyday and think, "OK ...) Anyway, the work I am passionate about is leading me to build a small production studio, which will help me with other radio, theater, print and video/social media projects. [more inside]

Filmmaker Filter: Shooting in 4K for a 1080p film?

In our continuing novice adventure in filmmaking, our gang of newbies is entering into a film festival contest. (Deadline Nov 30th!). It's max seven minutes long. But we have a question. The contest requires films to be submitted in 1080p. Our gear can do 4K. Is there any advantage to shooting in 4K? Any advantage to editing in 4K and then rendering to 1080p? Or should we just shoot in 1080p?

Should I get a 55" 4k tv to use with my pc?

I have been using a 37" monitor, as my pc is also my tv, movie theatre and gaming machine. I am considering moving up to 55" 4k, and I think this would work out ok for my personal day to day computing (surfing, some music production), as well as to watch stuff on...However, I work from home, using a corporate laptop which does not output 4k. Is this likely to be manageable? I work doing tech support, using web based apps, and Microsoft Teams to connect to user's desktops.

UHD/4K Discs (and LoTR in particular)

I have a TCL TV that can 4K, but an older blu ray player that can't. There is an Amazon sale on 4K versions of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies today. My kiddo is currently obsessed with Lord of the Rings. Two related questions: Are 4K movies worthwhile in general, and are the transfers of the LOTR and Hobbit movies worthwhile in 4K? Specific version of the set here.

How to change framerate for 4k video?

My new toy is a 4K TV and I am loving watching TV and movies in glorious 4K. However I notice that some media has a high frame rate, probably 48fps or 60fps, while other media stays at the "standard" 24fps. How can I control the frame rate on what I see? [more inside]

Help me pick a new laptop!

My 6+ year old Dell Inspiron is starting to show its age, and I'm looking to upgrade - or at least starting to entertain the idea. Willing to spend a bit more this time around but there's so many choices! I'm willing to go up to about $1600 (or a bit more if it's really worth it), more details below the fold. [more inside]

Choppy, stuttering video on new 4K computer monitor

I recently bought a 32-inch 4K monitor (model ViewSonic VX3276-4K-MHD). I tried playing a bunch of 4K test videos that I found here, and they all play with noticeable choppiness. I tried Google Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. The same thing happens when I play a 4K video file using VLC Player. How should I fix this? [more inside]

Power output from 4k monitor not enough to charge Laptop

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E590 and recently got a new 4k monitor, a BenQ EW3270U. I connect the monitor via USB-C, but the power output of the monitor is too weak to charge my laptop. The only other option to connect is via HDMI, but I have only HDMI 1.4b which limits output to 24 Hz. So I am looking for a solution to charge my laptop while connecting it to the monitor. KVMs and ultra-wide displays and working-from-home, oh my!

I want to upgrade my home office desk with a KVM switch so I can use one keyboard/mouse/screen for both my personal PC and my work laptop. While I'm changing things, I also want to upgrade at least one display on my personal PC, which I'd then share with my work laptop via the KVM. I haven't properly researched new monitors in close to 15 years. And of course I have relatively particular needs and I'm not sure how to balance them. [more inside]

What TV Brand/Technology/Pricepoint should I purchase today?

We're finally able to upgrade from our ~8 year old, 40 inch LED LCD to something bigger and better? What make/model/retailer would you go with if you were in our shoes? Bonus points if I don't have to step foot in a store. I know that sounds crazy/bold but I tend to get flooded with options and would rather have delivery than dealing with hauling a huge TV home. Recommendation for office infographic display TV?

Is a 4k monitor, downscaled to 1600x900 crisp?

Can a 4k 21.5 inch monitor do 1600x900 crisply? The standard 21 inch resolution is 1920x1080, which means DPI 102, and that's unusable for me. UI elements are too small for me to see. I could scale it to 1600x900, but for a standard monitor, it gets fuzzy. Does a 4k monitor solve this issue? I'm using a late 2014 Mac Mini (i7 3.0GHz, 16GB RAM). [more inside]

On a laptop with UHD/QHD/4K hi-res display, will I have scaling issues?

I've been reading about new laptops with very high resolution such as 3200x1800, 3840x2160, etc. It sounds amazing for my programming, it's a big plus to view more code on the screen at a time. But I've heard that the ultra-high resolution will make it difficult to even read the text, without scaling, which some say is problematic even in Windows 10 (and especially with an auxiliary monitor). Can someone advise who has firsthand experience with this? Should I wait until UHD/4K technology (and Windows) matures a bit more, before shooting for such high res? [more inside]

Can I put a switch between two external displays on a 5K iMac?

I'm getting ready to replace my 2009 Mac Pro, and I have just about decided to get a retina 5K iMac. The only place where it doesn't measure up to how I currently use my Pro (and would continue doing with a new Mac Pro) is in external display support. Right now I have two monitors on my desktop for work, and an old TV on the opposite side of my office for streaming stuff to. The current Pro runs all this just fine, but it appears the iMac is limited to one external display. [more inside]

Barebones 4K-Ready Computer Build?

It's been about decade since I've put together a machine, but would a Shuttle DS81, an i7-4790S Haswell 3.2GHz LGA 1150 65W processor, a Seiki SE39UY04 39-Inch 4K Ultra HD "monitor", and a DisplayPort 1.1 to HDMI 1.4 Active Adapter (plus a drive, RAM, and an OS) be everything I need to effectively achieve 4K Resolution?
