More young adults are claiming disability pensions, according to the social insurance institution Kela.
At the end of 2023 some 18,000 people in this age group were receiving disability pensions, a small rise on the previous year.
Among 16-24-year-olds, however, the number claiming these pensions fell slightly. At the end of 2023 some 7,600 people were claiming disability pensions or temporary rehabilitation allowance.
Disability pension recipient numbers had fallen in 2021 and 2022. Before that, the number of young recipients of disability pensions had risen steadily for a decade.
The majority of people aged under 35 receiving disability pensions did so because of mental health problems.
