20 October - 24 October 2008

TPAC 2008: the Combined Technical Plenary / Advisory Committee meetings week brings together W3C Working and Interest Groups, the Advisory Board, the TAG and the Advisory Committee for an exciting week of coordinated work. The highlight of the week is the Plenary Day, Wednesday, 22 October, for all to attend.

Participation

Participation in the Technical Plenary is open to participants in good standing in a W3C Working or Interest Group, Advisory Committee Representatives, the TAG, the Advisory Board, Offices staff or Team.

Participation in the All Group Meetings is subject to each group's observer and confidentiality policies. Please contact the WG or IG Chair for information about participation policy (see Member-only Chair contact information [W3C Member access]).

Participation in the Advisory Committee Meeting is open to one Advisory Committee representative from each Member Organization. The TAG, the Advisory Board, Chairs, Offices staff and Team members are also encouraged to attend. From section 2.1.3.2 of the Process Document:

Each Member organization SHOULD send one representative to each Advisory Committee meeting. In exceptional circumstances (e.g., during a period of transition between representatives from an organization), the meeting Chair [CEO, Steve Bratt] MAY allow a Member organization to send two representatives to a meeting.

Further, we announced in February 2007 that if an Advisory Committee Representative cannot attend the meeting an alternative may be sent instead.

Background

In 2005, W3C CEO Steve Bratt initiated discussions with AC representatives and Chairs on options for rearranging our annual calendar of big meetings in order to increase the value of these meetings. The resulting was to hold a joint TP/AC Week around November of each year.

Benefits we hope to encourage by co-locating the meetings include: more AC reps attending the AC meeting, more AC reps attending or observing group meetings and participating in the Technical Plenary Day, all participants benefiting from an expanded level of interaction and that members with representatives who are Chairs or are in Groups, the AB or the TAG would be able save time and travel costs by reducing the number of meetings each year.

Transportation

Nice International Airport is the closest international airport to the meeting site. The Pullman Cannes Mandelieu Royal Casino is located about 20 miles from the airport. The travel time between the airport and the hotel (meeting site) will vary between 30 minutes to one hour depending on traffic conditions. Taxi fares will range between 70-80 Euros.

Please Note: All events will take place at the hotel. There is a small harbor village nearby and Cannes croisette is a 5 minute cab ride.

By car:

If you are renting a car at the airport, please take the highway A8 to the West, in the direction of Cannes and Aix en Provence. This is a toll road.

Pass both the Cannes and Cannes La Bocca exits, to Exit 40, Mandelieu La Napoule. As you exit, you will take an obligatory right turn after ~100M, and then, shortly thereafter, turn right again at the traffic signal. Continue on that road until it ends at a T intersection. Turn Left. Now proceed to the end of that road at a golf course, just after a small bridge over the river La Siagne. Turn Right. Proceed with the golf course on your left. In ~100M, when you see a road on your right and a road on the left going up, take the road going up on the left for about 10 meters to a T. You will see the water front here. Turn Right. The hotel is on your left: proceed about 50M, until you can turn left into the entrance of the hotel.

By train:

If you are using the railways note that there is a train station "Mandelieu La Napoule" but that not all trains stop there. The nearest train station where all trains stop is "Cannes".

A shuttle bus is available from Terminal 1 of Nice Airport and stops near the Nice Saint-Augustin train stations (Bus line 23, every 12 minutes during the week). One ticket costs 1 Euro.

* If you take an omnibus (TER (Transport Express Régional), they do stop at every station, including "Mandelieu La Napoule"), you have to walk (10 minutes) in the direction of Mandelieu castle (should be right in front of station, or quite near) and then straight ahead down the hill, pass the harbor and onto the Pullman Cannes Mandelieu Royal Casino which is on the seaside.

* If you take a rapid train (they only stop in main stations), exit at "Cannes". From there you will find cabs.

See the Les Arcs - Nice (west-east) Nice - Les Arcs (east-west) train timetables (06jul2008-13dec2008).
