your parents don't get to decide for you what does and does not count as private information about you that they are allowed access to.
when you're mad at your parents you should be allowed to leave the situation, and you should be allowed to be mad at them. Your parents don't get to control how you feel about them.
it's not normal to feel like you have to hide very basic information about yourself from your parents. it's not normal to feel terrified of expressing that your parents did something wrong, or that you dislike how they treat you.
It’s not normal to set a basic boundary over and over again only to have it breached over and over again. It’s not normal to have parents decide for you that your boundaries are conditional, and allowed to be violated under specific circumstances that you don’t agree to.
I haven't written anything about what's happening at USAID, i think because I feel so sickened and overwhelmed by it. the number of vulnerable people worldwide who have died and will die because of the psychological defects of earth's wealthiest, most pathetic men is astonishing.
If you live in a represented territory in the U.S., here is a script from a beloved friend and ex-USAID staffer that you can say to your Congressional reps. Find their numbers here.
"Hello Representative [XYZ], My name is [XYZ] and I live in [XYZ]. I’m calling to urge you to reclaim Congressional power and ensure USAID's continued operations. The agency has broad bipartisan support, positively impacts US businesses and domestic security, and is crucial to US influence abroad. Protecting this agency and its mission from biased political interference during your tenure will impact my vote in the next election. Thank you.”
I understand that a phrase like "US influence abroad" might feel distasteful to those of us who think US influence abroad is, and has been, Bad Actually. I think of it like I am playing a part where I have to pretend that we all agree this country is good so that fewer people die. USAID is one of the few agencies that is redistributing this country's resources globally in a useful way; I believe that is worth making an effort to protect.
I also haven't urged people to call their reps in a while. I understand why you might feel it is pointless. However I also think often it is good to do something pointless for the sake of having done it. IDK try it and see.
FYI none of the 22-year-old groypers currently setting policy think Americans give a fuck about anything (archive.ph link from the NYT) and when it turns out we do they freak out and reverse course. so Just Complaining is, actually, a meaningful action item. Here's one script specific to USAID.
What it says on the tin, plus some simple explanations of who has the power to do what.
if you recently bought marketside broccoli from walmart, throw it out
I think maybe this man needs to be dressed like a shark and thrown to adolescent porpoises.
I might've organised this Devil's Sacrament, but you rocked up to it in full ceremonial garb

Meditations in an Emergency
by Cameron Awkward-Rich
I wake up & it breaks my heart. I draw the blinds & the thrill of rain breaks my heart. I go outside. I ride the train, walk among the buildings, men in Monday suits. The flight of doves, the city of tents beneath the underpass, the huddled mass, old women hawking roses, & children all of them, break my heart. There's a dream I have in which I love the world. I run from end to end like fingers through her hair. There are no borders, only wind. Like you, I was born. Like you, I was raised in the institution of dreaming. Hand on my heart. Hand on my stupid heart.
Oh that immediately and insufferably makes me want to write an experimental fic that uses different coding/formatting specifically to play with the problem. Oh it would be SO obnoxious
I'm glad he mentioned ASL because the solution is so incredibly obvious when encoding duplicate pronouns into gesture. It is so elegant, and can even be used by someone speaking aloud, if they talk with their hands a little bit. We already do it with pointing, but usually not when the subject isn't present.
Fucking slain in my tracks by this postcard on my friend’s dresser
yall. yall.
Even the goddamn magats are upset.
A lot of roughnecks will lose their goddamn arms throwing the chains is all I'm going to say. Fuck that's terrifying.
Call your red state people, please. And blue state, but definitely red state. This affects everyone. I'm in oil country. This is serious to all kinds of people. Your voice matters here more than you might think.

if you recently bought marketside broccoli from walmart, throw it out
OH WORM?
It's from a different lot, but produced around the same time, from a place affected by the recalls, bought in a place affected by the recalls.
IF YOU HAVE EATEN THESE AND BECOME ILL, OR EVEN EATEN FOOD FROM A DIFFERENT LOT, REPORT IT. REPORT IT!
If enough people report being sick from a different lot it can be added to the recall.
Reporting takes a bit, there's a lot of information to fill out, but it is SO IMPORTANT.
I know they say throw it away, but...I think maybe keep it if it's from a different lot until they tell you to throw it away. I submitted a report but will be calling them tomorrow. I'm really pissed off.
