As someone who would rather cut off my own limb than talk on the phone, I do not say this lightly. Now is the time to conquer our phone anxieties!
Amongst huge cuts to social programs that benefit millions of Americans, like medicaid and SNAP, the Big Beautiful Bill also includes provisions that will cut billions to student aid, cuts to the Federal Employee Retirement System, cut funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and ban states from regulating AI for the next decade.
This will add trillions of dollars to the debt, and all to pay for tax cuts that benefit the wealthiest in our country.
New data shows that the majority of Americans cannot afford the cost of basics needed for a stable life.
In 2023, the bottom 60% of income earners brought in an average of $38,000, but needed to make $67,000 to afford the average cost of housing, food, transportation, and healthcare.
How does one of the richest countries in the world have this much of our population struggling to cover the cost of basics?
The US has the greatest income inequality out of any developed nation and this gap will only continue to grow if things don’t change. Especially now with the Republican budget that aims to cut programs that millions of Americans rely on like Medicaid and SNAP all to help pay for huge tax cuts for the wealthiest. This will be the largest transfer of wealth in American history.
Happy (Belated) Independent Bookstore Day
So I may have missed Independent Bookstore Day, but, hey, any day is a good day to give your local bookstore some love, especially if they happen to carry “Drawn To Key West.”
“Drawn To Key West” documents the lives of real street performers, explores pursuing your passions, and why people create.
If you’re in Key West, check out Books & Books or Island Books to grab a copy!
According to a recent report from the Yale Budget Lab—a non-partisan policy research center–that looks at how Trump tariffs will affect consumers in the short term and long term.
While the average annual cost to households is $4,900, tariffs burden households at the bottom of the income ladder. Those with less disposable income will pay more, up to $10,500 in annual losses.
