with how much this series is stuck in my head this is like the first time I've drawn anything for it

The reason Utena’s character resonates so deeply with me is because she cares. She cares intensely, tries incredibly hard to help, but still ends up hurting the very people she wishes to save in her ignorance. (Which, granted, Anthy does her absolute best to keep Utena in that ignorance to avoid Utena seeing her for who she really is - who Utena accepts in the end regardless). Utena places her identity in being this person who helps, not realizing that even subverting roles is still playing the game. Being a prince won’t save her or Anthy. But it’s what she knows, so she tries.

Sometimes, no matter how strong your efforts, you still fail. And yet you must continue to show up. Lest you fall into the trap of complacency, perpetuating the very system you wished to escape, you must continue.
