Mawasi Al-Qarara Mutual Aid Project (MAQMAP) is aiming to provide the displaced families in Mawasi Al-Qarara refugee camp with car fare so that they can move back to their home cities.

These people have been forced from their homes via the most brutal means imaginable. A vital part of resistance to settler-colonialism and genocide is steadfastness in the land. Palestinians are going to need solidarity as they relocate and rebuild.

The prospective ceasefire is of course good news, but we can't lose momentum now. A lot of people are still stranded far from their homes!

Israeli Jewish settlers rampaged through several Palestinian towns in the West Bank on 19 January in a show of anger at a ceasefire deal that saw the end of fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli captives.

Settlers across the West Bank organized themselves in an effort to disrupt the release of Palestinians held captive in Israeli prisons and detention centers, where torture and rape are common.

Accompanied by soldiers, the settlers attacked Palestinian cars and closed several main roads in Turmus Ayy, Atara, Ein Siniya, Ein Ayoub, Qalqilya, and Jaba on Sunday evening.

In Sinjil, two houses were torched along with four vehicles, WAFA news agency reported.

Footage released on social media shows Israeli settlers hurling stones and Molotov cocktails in their raids.

Members of Israel’s settler movement and its leaders, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, have rejected the ceasefire deal, insisting instead that the war on Gaza that has killed over 46,000 Palestinians – the majority women and children – should continue.

Prior to the agreement, Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Israel Katz released all 16 settlers who were under administration detention due to their involvement in attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.

The release of the settlers was meant “to convey a clear message of strengthening and encouraging the settlements,” he said.

Also on Sunday evening, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Israeli soldiers shot and killed 14-year-old Ahmad Rashid Rushdi Jazar in the town of Sebastia near Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank.

An Israeli reservist soldier was killed and two others wounded, including a senior officer, when they were hit by a roadside bomb in the West Bank overnight, the military announced on Monday morning.

The soldiers were in a light armored vehicle patrolling the town of Tamun in the northern West Bank when the bomb detonated.

Back to the homeland

Next week, the occupation will allow us to return to our homes from which we were forcibly removed on October 7. We will return to our neighborhood, our area, and our city, but after what the occupation has done to destroy it. We will come back to mourn our homes and our shattered memories. The occupation has literally brought us back to square one. We will start working anew for a dignified life. We will begin to clear the rubble of our homes and rebuild them from scratch. During this entire period, which might take two or three years, we will live in poor conditions and face hardships and bitterness at all times.

But we will not give up; we will continue to work and struggle to rebuild our homes and restore our city, and we will not abandon it until death. We will continue to work together as one group, and you, my friends, can join us in that.

What is the first thing I will do when a ceasefire is declared in Gaza?

The first thing? Honestly, I don’t know if I can give a clear answer, because simply put, we’ve started living day by day.

But let me tell you, the first thing I will do is… breathe. Yes, breathe in air without fear, lift my head to the sky, and feel that there are no planes above us, that the only sound I hear is the sound of life.

And then? I will run. I will run through our streets that have turned to rubble, searching for my family, my friends, for any traces of our lives that used to be. I will run to the grave of my friends whom we buried hastily under the shelling, trying to tidy up the grave, telling them: “My friend, the shelling has calmed down… we can sit for a while without fear.”

I will return to where our house used to be, gather some memories from under the rubble, maybe I’ll find a photo or a piece of cloth or even a scent that used to live in that place. I will sit with my family under the tent that sheltered us instead of our home, and I will try to tell them that tomorrow will be better, even if I myself don’t believe it.

And then? I will dream. I will start to draw new dreams, small dreams… like a cup of tea on a quiet morning, or big ones… like rebuilding our home from scratch.
