I was talking about quarterback stats in a thread today, and I mentioned that I tend to put more faith in per-pass ratings than in stuff like overall yardage, overall TD passes, etc. I said passer rating is my favorite single stat, but the ESPN QBR stat is also worth looking at because it attempts to account for rushing and sacks, which passer rating does not.
And I said that I thought that if you did (2 X passer rating) + (QBR), you would have a stat that is better than either of those. So I did exactly that, and put together this list.
These are based on 2023 passer rating and 2023 QBR, nothing else.
- Brock Purdy 298.8
- Dak Prescott 284.5
- Kirk Cousins 270.8
- Lamar Jackson 270.1
- Tua Tagovailoa 260.0
- C.J. Stroud 259.1
- Jared Goff 256.1
- Jordan Love 254.3
- Josh Allen 254.0
- Derek Carr 251.9
- Justin Herbert 250.3
- Matt Stafford 249.0
- Patrick Mahomes 248.3
- Russell Wilson 246.7
- Geno Smith 243.7
- Baker Mayfield 243.5
- Jalen Hurts 238.3
- Joe Burrow 233.6
- Trevor Lawrence 233.1
- Gardner Minshew 228.8
- Justin Fields 218.7
- Joshua Dobbs 210.8
- Aidan O’Connell 208.3
- Desmond Ridder 206.9
- Kenny Pickett 200.9
- Sam Howell 200.2
- Mac Jones 190.7
- Zach Wilson 184.8
- Bryce Young 181.1
I think it's a pretty good list.
By the way, the one guy that stands out--Mahomes--did not have a great regular season. I don't think 13th is wildly off. (These are based on regular season stats.)
