Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.

Different items

[edit]

Hi, please see the difference between Department of Justice, Rating, Titles and Qualification (Q1750377), an organisation, and Brazilian Advisory Rating System (Q26323090) the rating system it maintains. As a general rule, we have different items for different entitites/things. – Máté (talk) 06:06, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Songs and singles

[edit]

See Q56085802, Q56085788 and Q1886329 for examples (see also the deletion discussion for P1432 (P1432), and Wikidata:WikiProject Music#Overview). There are about a few hundred more of these items, but currently there have been no semi-automatic imports to establish this sort of item structure, and this probably breaks some Wikidata infoboxes. video game publishers

[edit]

Hi, thanks for creating items about video game publishers. But it would be nice to add to these items some sources, identifiers and more corporate properties (at least some basic one like country (P17), headquarters location (P159), industry (P452) and official website (P856).--Jklamo (talk) 07:02, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Finding information and identifiers about small video game companies can be surprisingly hard. What do you use? Trade (talk) 22:47, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creating properties

[edit]

Hi! It seems that you have tried to create a property "content descriptor" at Q61519786, but you have created an item instead. Creating a property is slightly more complicated than creating an item: you must propose the property to the community first (see Wikidata:Property proposal). If you need help for that, let me know on my talk page. − Pintoch (talk) 10:06, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, You canceled me after my patrol. While:

  • Where does this information come from? This information should have a reference (2232 ?).
  • Depending on the site, the number is higher.
  • The 4 successive changes by the IP in less than 3 minutes looks like vandalism.
  • If the information goes back from this page, the date inserted by the IP is false (and the number too, QED). In addition, the information was valid 3 years ago.
  • The rb doesn't need an explanation, so when you Undo, write why.

In view of my explanation above, I am forced to reverter your modification as long as this information is hazardous. Cordially. --Eihel (talk) 00:30, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you please revert your recent string of edits to Robin Williams (Q83338)? You have added a suicide method to the cause of death property on that item. Suicide methods are neither a manner of death, nor a cause of death, but rather a suicide method. - 2600:1702:31B0:9CE0:B117:3B68:E7EB:EC39 00:31, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In your opinion, what's the correct way to use suicide methods items? --Trade (talk) 12:23, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creating properties

[edit]

Hi!

It seems that you have tried to create a property "content descriptor" at Q63871158. In Wikidata we have a distinction between items and properties, and what you created is an item, so you will not be able to use it as a property as you probably expected. To get this created as a property, you need to propose it: see Wikidata:Property_proposal. If you need any help with that process, let me know on my talk page.

Keep up the good work! − Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 09:35, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey ZI Jony, i just wanted to created something like Wikidata property related to sport (Q21818626) but with weightlifting instead of sport. As i remember, the only difference between Q63871158 and something like Wikidata property related to cycling (Q23660994) was the subject. Kind regards. Trade (talk) 21:54, 19 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Id'er for filmdatabasen

[edit]

Hej. --Steenth (talk) 20:24, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Metacritic vales order on Watch Dogs: Bad Blood (Q64577202)

[edit]

Hey,

I don’t fully get your latest changes on Watch Dogs: Bad Blood (Q64577202). Was that to get the IDs in a specific order?

Jean-Fred (talk) 15:46, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jean-Fred: Pretty much, yes. Seeing Metacritic IDs with platforms in the 'wrong' order is somewhat a pet peeve of mine. I wish there was a way to standardize it, so to say. I really hope it doesn't bother you? --Trade (talk) 16:00, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not really because for me there’s no 'right' or 'wrong' order between platforms :) So I guess I find it kind of pointless, but hey, we all have our pet peeves of the sort so if that makes you happy, more power to you :)
(at some point in the not-so-far-future, I believe we will split VG items into one-per-platform anyways, so that won’t be an issue anymore ;-)
Jean-Fred (talk) 20:08, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Jean-Fred, unfortunately, it's also a very tedious process. First you have to remove the item, then you either have to place it at the bottom or replace another item. Then you need to find somewhere to the replaced item and etc. I've always wondered why we can't just click edit, move the order of the items around and then just save the whole thing?

Different items by casual confirming on Igromania ID

[edit]

Please note that you do different items on Igromania ID, are you confirm all items by casual way? If yes, please stop and let me control all the items that are wrong. Kirilloparma (talk) 22:49, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

From tomorrow I will start checking the items on Igromania mix'n'match catalogue, please don't match anything for now, I need to determine where are the wrong items, thank you. Kirilloparma (talk) 23:01, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Kirilloparma, as said before all the Rayman items in mix'n'match had their proper name. --Trade (talk) 22:19, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Aliases with parenthetical disambiguators

[edit]

Hi! In this diff, you added the alias "Joseph (The Simpsons)" for Joseph (Q65576697). Was it your intention to claim that English texts commonly use that string to refer to this entity? We don't normally include parenthetical disambiguators in our labels and aliases. Instead, disambiguation is done in the description and in the item properties. See Help:Aliases for more. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 21:39, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So many items have the name 'Joseph', making the item quite cumbersome to find again hence why i used the the parenthetical disambiguators. I think it's okay to do when you have more than 20 items with the exact same name in the same language. --Trade (talk) 23:21, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand your response correctly, you are saying that the answer to my question is "no", and that you are adding this disambiguated alias in the hope that it will make one of your preferred entities easier for you to search for. As a comparison, here is a search for "nelson simpsons" which produces Nelson Muntz (Q1511163) as the first result despite the fact that it has no such disambiguated alias. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 03:58, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Music websites

[edit]

Hello. I think we have still lacks of some music sales websites (in fact they aren't all streaming services) for artists id and we are missing yet more ids for albums, singles and tracks even for those popular streaming services. It would be like 20 missing websites for albums, 20 missing websites for songs etc. I have it on eye but I have no idea when I will get motivation for it. Eurohunter (talk) 07:55, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you just created Wikidata property related to music streaming services (Q66118123) so it's kinda hurried move due to they all aren't providing streaming services. Btw. would be good to have all related "categories" of music properties items at Wikidata property related to music (Q27525351) (related to song, record chart, streaming service etc.). Eurohunter (talk) 08:00, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Datamaster1: You were using the properties in ways they aren't supposed to be used. Using 'published in' on instances of human is one of them. --Trade (talk) 17:28, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That is fine... my issue is with you removing sources and qualities that are accurate. Also, the Washington Examiner doe not have any description. Datamaster1 (talk) 17:30, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Datamaster1: May i ask why you removed my archived URL and changed the YouTube URL? --Trade (talk) 17:34, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well to start there is no need for keeping an old outdated url when there is a newly updated on cited it just creates confusion, as for the Youtube page there is no reference saying that is his Youtube but the one cited show him interviewing individuals and looks to be associated with his employer. iHeartRadio artist ID

[edit]

WHy do you keep changing iHeart artist ID (P7317) to link to the Internet Archive instead of iheart.com? Trivialist (talk) 00:38, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The ID's for this property have become lost due to link rot. Without the Internet Archive link, the property is useless. --Trade (talk) 00:48, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Again, that's not link rot. It's deliberate that the property only uses the ID number, because the text between /artist/ and the ID number is irrelevant:
I know it's deliberate because I wrote the original property proposal. Trivialist (talk) 00:59, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

P1343/P973 switches

[edit]

Hi Trade,

Would you avoid doing that switch? It just complicates changing them to dedicated properties later. --- Jura 23:47, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jura1:Okay, but if i'm adding a link to a item i plan on using described by source (P1343) instead of described at URL (P973). Would that be okay? --Trade (talk) 23:55, 11 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
described by source (P1343) is generally not used for online resources .. why not use a property? --- Jura 00:02, 12 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jura1: Either one of two things. 1: Neither the property nor the website exists on Wikidata or 2: the formatter URL of said property does not allow me to use it. For example Kiva Andru (Q61890789) have a page on BTVA but due to the difference in formatter URL i cannot use the appropriate property (Behind The Voice Actors character ID (P5107), Kiva-Andru)
I have tried to use 'described at URL' in the past but once you reach more than three links the result tends to be ugly and cumbersome to navigate. --Trade (talk) 00:13, 12 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The reason to use P973 is precisely that the property doesn't exist yet. --- Jura 00:16, 12 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Riley Beek being intersex ?

Hi, I did see that you have changed sex or gender (P21) on Riley Beek (Q73715753), on https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q73715753&diff=1160906991&oldid=1123094491 . I almost reverted it since there is sometime vandals doing that (assuming because some people both confuse intersex and trans, and consider trans to be a insult), especially when the information is not sourced at all. But since I think you are not a vandal :p, I do wonder where the information comes from, as I wasn't able to find anything related on that after a quick search (but it could be a instagram comment, which I cannot read freelyit seems). Hi! Nothing against this, but what is the "structural need"? --Syrio posso aiutare? 22:18, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The way i understand it: Any fictional identifiable entity that cam be seriously and reliable described by the notable work of fiction in question are considered notable. Otherwise, nobody would be able to create narrative items due to the constant threat of deletion --Trade (talk) 23:40, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
By my comprehension of Wikidata:Notability, "structural need" is more the fact that the item is usefull. Like MarieChantal (Q57480690) is not notable by itself, but we need it because it's used by MarieChantal Chassé (Q56877041). For a finctional State, faction, I imagine that it need to be used by a caracter, or a other faction. --Fralambert (talk) 01:47, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it depends on how much you want to go in detail with the fictional universe: every character, faction, place and race has connection to several others, which have other connections, and so on. The Warcraft setting is *huge*, by a swift check here the factions alone are at least 190, probably more, and every one of them "can be can be described using serious and publicly available references" (as I understand this words). Where is the limit? --Syrio posso aiutare? 14:58, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Shouldn't it just use subject named as (P1810) instead of website username or ID (P554)? Otherwise "name in encyclopedia", "name in streaming service" etc. also would be needed. Eurohunter (talk) 13:13, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

'website username' was created for use with 'have website account on'. It's not a very good comparison
--Trade (talk) 13:16, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"website username" says "only use as qualifier of P553". "P553" is "website account on" so there would be needed "username" for each type website. Is it expected? Eurohunter (talk) 22:16, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And there was a similarity between the account patterns he created. Since these two fit, I investigated this user and they were the same user. --Sotiale (talk) 15:21, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Might wanna change the block description so people know he's a sock of LaraLili2000. --Trade (talk) 15:24, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How about attaching a template to their userpages like you did to Anan islam account group before? I think that will suffice. Since the account record appears in their CentralAuth, I don't think there will be any problem if you attach the template without block log :D --Sotiale (talk) 15:45, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ạ== Property:P641 ==

Hey,

I noticed you bot-added sport (P641) to games. I found it surprising because I have been sort-of removing them in favour of genre (P136) − especially since you created so many sub-genres (eg American football video game (Q63915391)). The information is a bit redundant isn’t it?

I could have seen a situation where we would have done

⟨ NFL 2K (Q67389378)  View with Reasonator View with SQID ⟩ genre (P136) View with SQID ⟨ sports video game (Q868217)  View with Reasonator View with SQID ⟩
sport (P641) View with SQID ⟨ American football (Q41323)  View with Reasonator View with SQID ⟩

but it seemed to me that the point of having items like American football video game (Q63915391) was to not do that?

(I do see cases where there is little point in having sub-genres, such as every possible poker variation − keep at card video game (Q29471320) and using qualifier to say it’s Texas hold 'em (Q214536) or whatever).

Jean-Fred (talk) 12:38, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sources for QuickStatements batches

[edit]

Hey,

I noticed some of your QS batches and your comment on the noticeboard regarding sources.

Took me a while to figure it out, but I noted down at User:Jean-Frédéric/QuickStatements notes how to add a comment and sources:

qid,P495,#,S143,s4656
Q17146,Q30,based on [[Q6849913]] in [[Q328]],Q328,""""https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_games_developed_in_the_United_States"
Q17150,Q30,based on [[Q6849913]] in [[Q328]],Q328,""""https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_games_developed_in_the_United_States"

This would add to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Q17146) with the comment “based on Category:Video games developed in the United States (Q6849913) in English Wikipedia (Q328)

country of origin (P495)
Normal rank United States of America (Q30)
add value

See eg Special:Diff/898733564/907967958.

Also, do make sure to give a name to the batch! “Import country of origin from English Wikipedia” would be plenty enough.

Hope that helps, Jean-Fred (talk) 11:19, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's not working @Jean-Frédéric:--Trade (talk) 11:05, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What is not working? I’m not sure I understand your screenshot either.
(When I prepare QS batches I personally always text editor.)
I just tried pasting the above excerpt into QS with “Import CSV commands” and it works just fine.
Jean-Fred (talk) 11:24, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you could try and upload a text file with this QS batch? Then i could copy it and see if it works for me. --Trade (talk) 11:29, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The following works for me: I just copy/pasted the following lines into QuickStatements, clicked “Import CSV commands” and it does prepare the batch correctly.
qid,P495,#,S143,s4656
Q26963045,Q30,based on [[Q8897708]] in [[Q328]],Q328,""""https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Video_games_developed_in_Argentina"
Looking more closely at your screenshot − the header cell should be “qid” not the ID of an actual Q-item. Maybe that’s the reason?
Can you tell me what steps you are following, and at which point it is not working?
Jean-Fred (talk) 13:16, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
First i use this query to extract items from categories then i just add the relevant data the normal way (Q26963045,p495,Q414=. What i need would be a QS that can import the items from the category and add the country of origin with the before mentioned source. --Trade (talk) 12:14, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for editing the data object Q104458110. I have a question or a comment about one of your edits. You first added the designation “Fédération de Handball du Congo Démocratique” as the native label. Then you added the abbreviation “DRCHF” and “marked” it as French. But doesn't the abbreviation "DRCHF" actually refer to the English name and not to the French? --Gymnicus (talk) 19:56, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't subject type constraint (Q21503250) to have relation (P2309)? It displays a warning icon. Esteban16 (talk) 18:30, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

--Steenth (talk) 10:47, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding ESRB Ratings

[edit]

I was curious if you had experienced running into games that listed an ESRB Rating on Steam, the Nintendo eShop, etc. but that had no entry in the ESRB database. Are these games using fake ESRB ratings (I assume not, but who knows), or is the ESRB database just kinda bad? Example: https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/agatha-knife-switch/

I figure if anyone would know the answer, it'd be you :)

Thanks, Nicereddy (talk) 05:08, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Microsoft Store does not allow games without ESRB, PEGI, USK, ACB, OFLC, CERO or RARS to be sold in their respective regions so i I presume that the same applies to the Nintendo E-Shop and the PlayStation Store. Looking at this query you'l see quite a few games with no ID. @Nicereddy: --Trade (talk) 07:14, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I made some edits here: The Local (Q3065033). I added many links to official website (P856), many language versions. @Trade, Lectrician1: oops, I accidentally reverted this change (missed this discussion). I described my point of view in the edit comment, but I'll repeat it here. YouTube exposes video titles both as a monolingual string and multilingual strings (in "localizations" object) - https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos?hl=en#resource-representation. However only monolingual title is required there. Therefore Wikidata should not add more requirements. The only way to provide a consistent way to synchronize and validate titles is to allow both monolingual "named as" (snippet.title) and multilingual "title" (localizations.xx.title). --Lockal (talk) 11:13, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Entity Q107231465 - Marked for Deletion, Why?

[edit]

Hey! Wondering why this is marked for deletion, and why it was flagged as an advert? As neither is the case - it is simply a business entity that has been constructed to help establish a better knowledge graph; as well as a preferential relationship between a site, and the entity that it exists as. In any case, can you direct me as to how to remedy this issue.

If you look at Google Knowledge Graph ID (P2671) you can see that it says "Wikidata property for an identifier that does not imply notability" meaning that not all entities (read: companies) with a Google Knowledge Graph are guaranteed an entry on Wikidata.

@Trade: @GerardM: You both created what seem to be similar items. I'm placing this discussion here, since Trade generated retracted scholarly article (Q77253277) after GerardM generated retracted paper (Q45182324). What is the intended difference Trade? You described your item as "scholarly article published but subsequently withdrawn" but what suggests that GerardM's item wouldn't include those specific articles? Pro Cycling Manager games might be duplicates

[edit]

Is there a reason to believe Pro Cycling Manager 2008 (Q107301141) is different from Pro Cycling Manager 2008 (Q650062)? I think the Pro Cycling Manager games you created a few hours ago are duplicates, although I'm not 100% sure since the naming of the series is a bit weird. I already merged the record for the 2012 game, but I figured I'd ask about the others in case you had a specific reason for creating a separate item here. AnimeClick anime ID

AnimeClick anime ID (P5845): it's not necessary to add item-requires-statement constraint of original language of film or TV show or country of origin because AnimeClick database includes titles, not only from Japan, but from other different countries too (examples: [1], [2], [3]).--Dany3535 (msg!) 10:55, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fictional time period

[edit]

Hello. Wouldn't the item fictional historical period (Q106921244) you created be the same as fictional historical period (Q18230293)? I say this because the analog is the same. I also wonder if a time period that is fictional makes sense by itself. I mean, two fictitious time units, six fictitious time units, twenty, one hundred... Hi, at this moment you added a number of checks in Genius ID (P6218)/Musixmatch track ID (P6742)/LyricsTranslate ID (P7212) to enforce moving such statements to vocal-tracks items (as far as I understand). But it contradicts with usicBrainz model, which looks more correct from my standpoint:

  1. musical work:
    1. may have lyrics (from whitelist), license, composer, lyricist, librettist, translator, dedicated to, etc. - https://musicbrainz.org/relationships/artist-work , language
    2. should not have: performer, links to actual music tracks, length, bpm, etc.
  1. recording:
    1. may have license, length, bpm, arranger, vocals, producer, engineer, links to youtube/spotify/etc. - https://musicbrainz.org/relationships/artist-recording
    2. should not have: composer, lyricist, lyrics, language (because all of these properties can be set in related musical work).

So I don't see the reason why we allow lyrics in recordings and disallow lyrics in songs. Constraint check should be set in an opposite way. As usual, talking about an idealized world of opinionated constraints, which reduce diverge from the "golden" path. --Lockal (talk) 11:16, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Upd: is also "kind of" contradicts with MusicComposition and MusicRecording schema (derived from MusicBrainz and musicontology.com), making impossible to link traditional songs (without recordings) to lyrics. --Lockal (talk) 12:50, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Moebeus:--Trade (talk) 17:41, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would venture a guess that 95% percent of lyrics IDs currently used are tied to recordings, evidenced by the same song having many IDs based on who sings (covers) it. But I agree that lyrics for traditional songs, not tied to a performing artist, belongs on the composition. Do we have many of those? Moebeus (talk) 17:55, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Moebeus:, I understand that we have a simplified data-model for recordings, combining both recording-related and work-related properties. My complaint is that we also have a full model and constraints added by Trade prevents from filling a full model (like if there is some hidden idea/vision behind these constraints, but I guess there is not).
If you are interested about percentage estimation:
--Lockal (talk) 10:09, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I hope we're not talking past each other here, but I think a distinction should be made between lyrics sites that are autogenerated based on tracks/recordings (like Musixmatch track ID) and sites like LiederNet that are about the actual works (not a separate ID for each recording). Why MusicBrainz allow Musixmatch links on works you'd have to ask them about, but it's clearly not ideal, you'd end up with tons of them for works that are covered a lot.
Whether we should actually enforce constraints at this point, with thousands of songs/singles/tracks still conflated and not conforming to the music model - Personally I think it's a little premature, using P1963 / P8952 to guide rather than enforce seems like a better option to me. Moebeus (talk) 10:53, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks, now I see what I missed. For example, Lyricstranslate has 1 page with Silent Night without specific artist and 18 copies of Silent Night for different artist, with slightly different formatting and each copy has its own set of translations. That's not how I imagined it (schema.org has much better solution, i. e. if artist performs slightly different lyrics, then it is possible to identify author and say that song is new one). Both Musixmatch and Lyricstranslate are mostly performer-centric, even though there are few exceptions like [5]. --Lockal (talk) 18:54, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Batch #63845 "Adding media franchise to Star Wars items"

[edit]

Hi, your resent group of edits Batch #63845 "Adding media franchise to Star Wars items" has the wrong franchise value (Futurama (Q60321246) instead of Star Wars (Q462)). It looks like you attempted to undo it but that undo only reverted 41 changes of the 93 that were made. I'm not sure why it didn't undo everything, but I figured you should know. An example is this edit to Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Q55214) - perhaps it didn't get undone because the franchise was already specified as Star Wars (Q462)? --Pokechu22 (talk) 18:41, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SCP list / Crom API

[edit]

Since you have some interest in SCP articles given your subpage User:Trade/SCPs, I thought I may as well tell you that the Crom GraphQL API is a nice resource to be able to pull data about published pages, including for non-English translation branches. You can filter by SCPs specifically by looking at the scp tag, and can get the object class by looking for an object class tag (e.g. euclid, keter). It's a lot more convenient than any automated operations directly interfacing with Wikidot, which lacks a proper API.

Not sure how much of this is useful to your work here on Wikidata, but I thought it was worth mentioning at least.

Strange merge

[edit]

Hi,

I see that you merged Wikidata property related to music (Q107113755) in Wikidata property for items about musical works (Q22965078) last June. This seems strange and the result is a bit wrong as the first one was for identifiers and the second is not for identifiers, for instance composer (P86) is now a subclass of identifier (same for all other properties related to musical works). Either we should undo the merge or remove the wrong subclass, I'll let you have a look and tell me what you think.

Wikidot

[edit]

Hey, as I've made related changes, I've noticed that Wikidot (Q7999846) has some ambiguity issues, and I wanted to know your opinion. Essentially, an interesting thing about Wikidata is it distinguishes between similar but distinct concepts with the same name, such as SCP Foundation (Q17439649) (the website) and SCP Foundation (Q59475479) (the in-universe organization). I'm wondering if Wikidot is having a similar issue, looking at the current mess of instance of (P31) statements. Personally, I can see three concepts combined within Q7999846:

  • Wikidot, Inc. (the corporation)
  • Wikidot (the wiki software)
  • Wikidot.com (the website run by the above corporation running the above software)

How are situations similar to this handled? I would imagine that the "corporation" and "website" concepts would be in the same Q item, similar to YouTube (Q866), but I couldn't find a good reference for "software" vs "website running that software".

Thanks. aismallard (talk) 07:22, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"copyrighted" or "copylefted"?

[edit]

When giving free works of fiction the copyright status (P6216) property, should we give it copyrighted (Q50423863), or the more specific copylefted (Q109332052)? I've noticed SCP (Q81113235) items don't have a consistent value for these, and I thought it would make sense for them to be all the same either way. aismallard (talk) 23:22, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

copyleft (Q133475)'the practice of using copyright law to offer the right to distribute copies and modified versions of a work and requiring that the same rights be preserved in modified versions of the work'. Well, do you think this is an accurate description of the license used by the SCP Foundation site? @Aismallard:--Trade (talk) 23:29, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The site uses the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (Q14946043) license, which is a share-alike/copyleft license, so I think it is, yes. aismallard (talk) 23:31, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then we go with copyleft @Aismallard:--Trade (talk) 23:33, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like copylefted (Q109332052) is not supposed to be used in copyright status (P6216), see Property talk:P6216#Don't use copylefted. I've changed several of the properties to use copyrighted (Q50423863). aismallard (talk) 00:42, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Items with both voice actor + character role and characters + voice actor

[edit]

Hi Trade, I noticed that there are several items having both voice actor (P725) x / character role (P453) y and characters (P674) y / voice actor (P725) x (e.g. Animal Crockers/One Flu Over the Crocker's Nest (Q111698373). This seems a bit redundant to me as both statements express the same. According to WikiProject Movies we should use cast member (P161) x / character role (P453) y in the case of actors and I thought that this should be the same for voice actors. Is there a reason to have the additional characters (P674) y / voice actor (P725) x? (I already started deleting voice actor (P725) x as a qualifier to characters (P674) y if voice actor (P725) x with qualifier character role (P453) y is present at the item, but I could undo my edits if these qualifiers are not redundant). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 20:49, 24 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Careful

[edit]

When you do something like add a claim for someone's last words, please use a better source than TV Tropes.

That sounds plausible, and it's all over the place, but I have no idea how long it'll take to find a legit source. Apparently TV Tropes edit histories only show the most recent 15 versions unless you create an account, which I decline to do; it's probably in the media somewhere from between 1994 (when he was killed) and 2004 (when TV Tropes was created). Indie DB vs Mod DB

[edit]

Greetings. Can you enlighten me regarding the relationship between these two databases? As I understood from your edit, if the game is available in the IndieDB database, then it's also available in ModDB under the same slug. Is it correct? Basically everytime I set Indie DB game ID (P6717), I should also set Mod DB game ID (P6774) with the same value? Facenapalm (talk) 01:35, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. All Indie DB game ID (P6717) are available on Mod DB game ID (P6774) using the exact same slug but not vice versa. You should consider requesting a bot to add Mod DB game ID (P6774) automatically. It would likely be easier @Facenapalm:--Trade (talk) 20:28, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Significant event property constraint change

[edit]

You made a change to the "significant event" statement concerning the "item of property constraint". Now the entity "Texas Book Festival" shows it should be not used with that statement, which was not the case before you made the change. I don't understand this well enough. Can this be fixed? Nv8200pa (talk) 11:15, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am not understanding why this is separate from clitoris (Q873072). Both pages seem to display the same article level material. If they need to be separate then it would be worthwhile putting something explanatory for eyes to understand the difference that you are attributing. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:58, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And it would be worthwhile IMO in showing that with different from (P1889), which would also stop it showing in the merge pages.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:01, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment

[edit]

Dear Trade,

I hope you are doing well,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I am working on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender model that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our model based on your previous edits.

Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published in a research venue.

The experiment should take no more than 15 minutes, and it will be held next week.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfA1wfdBfCRlcG3WhDyc-V8lzgPNx3fDFCNXkyn4CSwahXZ_A/viewform?usp=sf_link

Then, I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about my project, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa

In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

"has written for" (P6872)

[edit]

You recently added a required qualifier constraint to this property, saying that URL is required. What does this mean? (I notice that none of the examples on the property currently include this qualifier.) Dsp13 (talk) 22:17, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See Justin Caffier (Q123726266) Trade (talk) 23:14, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Two follow-up questions:
  1. what are the intended semantics for the URL qualifier when used with this property? If it has to be a webpage, hosted by the publication in question, listing them as contributor, then I don't think we can make it required. (Imagine the case of someone who has written for a pre-internet magazine, or contributed to a book, where there is no such url.) If it is simply meant to be a reference, then should we not use reference rather than a qualifier?
  2. where is this semantics documented? Dsp13 (talk) 23:40, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In my experience the statements not about websites makes up a very small minority. It's just that people never got around to add the URLs Trade (talk) 01:14, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's just not true. I looked at a small sample of the ~7000 Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P6872#"Mandatory_Qualifiers"_violations violations, and website URLs existed for under half: Paul Morand (Q272) (dead, and no contributor page for his Figaro contributions, only a page which includes things written about him); Albert Wolff (Q95971) (long dead); Camilo Castelo Branco (Q365423) (long dead); Leon Còrdas (Q584083) (died 1987); Annie Lacroix-Riz (Q1089233) (a live historian, but there's e.g. no URL associated with the Revue d'histoire moderne et contemporaine which specifically lists her contributions); Caesar Gezelle (Q2154331) (long dead); Bill Cunningham (Q2903179) (URL exists for his NYT contributions); Henri Turot (Q3132097) (long dead); Claudia Dreifus (Q5129162) (URL exists for her NYT contributions); Albino Magaia (Q9594696) (no URL exists for his Tempo contributions); Nikola Kuzmičić (Q16114055) (alive but no URL exists for his Kana contributions). I don't think the required qualifier constraint is appropriate. Dsp13 (talk) 04:21, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

VR video game

[edit]

virtual reality video game (Q87741364) is currently an instance of (P31) video game genre (Q659563) and is used as a genre (P136) for 40 other items. I also think replacement property (P6824) is wrong as virtual reality video game (Q87741364) will be removed from output device (P5196) on account of it not being an output device. —Xezbeth (talk) 15:33, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you explain this constraint more? Why would it not be appropriate to identify an item as being an instance of YouTube video? Swpb (talk) 21:12, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are almost better and more descriptive items to use instead Trade (talk) 00:11, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Such as? These should be added as replacement value (P9729), otherwise the constraint isn't very helpful. And what "specific instances" are ok? And what makes them ok, as opposed to other videos? Those should be added as exception to constraint (P2303). Swpb (talk) 13:59, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"And what "specific instances" are ok?" If you can't think of any uses then it's not really an issue. Personally i would rather we use items actually related to the entity in question rather than adding it to random songs--Trade (talk) 14:15, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your constraint clarification (P6607) suggested exceptions, was that not your intent? And you didn't answer the first and most important part of my question: if YouTube video file (Q110875181) isn't an acceptable value for P31, what should be used in its place? Swpb (talk) 16:36, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Items that describes the entity and not a video that happens to be hosted on YouTube Trade (talk) 16:44, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't find that answer satisfying. There are over 1400 items identified as YouTube videos. Would you make them all instances of, say, Internet video (Q23058567) or video work (Q110879246) instead? Why, when we can be more specific? Is being hosted on YouTube too transient a characteristic? If there is going to be a constraint, there needs to be a good explanation for it. Swpb (talk) 16:54, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the constraint makes sense now, as revised. I'm going to migrate violations with QuickStatements. Swpb (talk) 17:30, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

questionable changes to P6872

[edit]

Hello. You've recently added a lot of "none-of constraints" to has written for (P6872), which now trigger a needless error message whenever a statement is made that author X wrote for certain publication that now happen to have online versions. Now, I don't know how old you are, but surely you must be aware that, for example, the publication New York (Q1507987) long predates nymag.com (Q93589669), and The Guardian (Q11148) has existed for much longer than TheGuardian.com (Q5614018). Thus, it is very likely that some (many?) authors, both living and deceased, have written only for the print publication (e.g. were dead long before computers were invented, let alone the internet, even if their articles have not been digitized). Thus, the various none-of constraint (Q52558054) values you've added to P6872 should be closely examined for appropriateness, if not wholesale reverted. Cheers. -Animalparty (talk) 02:06, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in the WQT UI requirements elicitation online workshop

[edit]

Dear Trade,

I hope you are doing well,

We are a group of researchers from King’s College London working on developing WQT (Wikidata Quality Toolkit), which will support a diverse set of editors in curating and validating Wikidata content.

We are inviting you to participate in an online workshop aimed at understanding the requirements for designing effective and easy-to-use user interfaces (UI) for three tools within WQT that can support the daily activities of Wikidata editors: recommending items to edit based on their personal preferences, finding items that need better references, and generating entity schemas automatically for better item quality.

The main activity during this workshop will be UI mockup sketching. To facilitate this, we encourage you to attend the workshop using a tablet or laptop with PowerPoint installed or any other drawing tools you prefer. This will allow for a more interactive and productive session as we delve into the UI mockup sketching activities.

Participation is completely voluntary. You should only take part if you want to and choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. However, your cooperation will be valuable for the WQT design. Please note that all data and responses collected during the workshop will be used solely for the purpose of improving the WQT and understanding editor requirements. We will analyze the results in an anonymized form, ensuring your privacy is protected. Personal information will be kept confidential and will be deleted once it has served its purpose in this research.

The online workshop, which will be held on April 5th, should take no more than 3 hours.

If you agree to participate in this workshop, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form to register your interest https://forms.office.com/e/9mrE8rXZVg Then, I will contact you with all the instructions for the workshop.

For more information about my project, please read this page: https://king-s-knowledge-graph-lab.github.io/WikidataQualityToolkit/

If you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me at the email address mentioned above.

Thank you for considering taking part in this project.

Papa Louie fictional holidays

[edit]

How am I doing so far with adding them? And I am only adding the fictional holidays from the game, like OnionFest, Pirate Bash, ChiliFest, etc, not any real world ones like New Year, Valentine's Day, St. Paddy's Day, etc. I'm guessing Baseball Season counts as a real world one too as it is an actual season/event every year where baseball is often played.

For these pages, I'm listing what games they occur in for "present in work", as well as what platform they're on, actually would it be easier to list the location the restaurant celebrating it is located in instead so I won't have to deal with adding all these platform qualifiers? (for reference "Adobe Flash" is the PC version, "tablet computer" is for HD versions like "Papa's Burgeria HD", and "iOS" and "Android" is for To Go! versions) 1033Forest (talk) 02:58, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

are you sure? – Shisma (talk) 11:22, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Got it now; I've seen that listed as a platform on other games which is why I added it for the games I've been adding before. What should I use instead as Flash games work on both Windows and Mac computers? 1033Forest (talk) 11:25, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't really matter what computers they run on. Browser games are web browser (Q6368).--Trade (talk) 14:25, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for finding the site of Attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Pennsylvania (Q127421251). However, when entering coordinates into the coordinate location (P625) field, please round to the nearest arcsecond (Q829073), lest you create false precision (Q3467464). The four extra digits past the decimal point is at the level of 2 mm of "precision". Also, the coordinates given on Wikidata are shown on Wikipedia, whose Project:Manual of Style (Q4994848) requests such rounding. Thanks, Abductive (talk) 02:21, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
