TL-R1620Sdc
Dual-controller SAS 12Gb/s storage expansion for enterprises
Featuring dual controllers, an OLED indicator, and a short-depth rackmount design, the 3U 16-bay TL-R1620Sdc SAS 12Gb/s storage expansion enclosure is ideal for expanding the storage capacity of Windows® servers. Both controllers have three Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) ports, supporting 12Gbps SAS and Broadcom® SAS DataBolt™ bandwidth optimization technology. The dual path mini-SAS design sustains continuous operations even if an external JBOD cable is disconnected. Up to 7 TL-R1620Sdc units can be daisy-chained via high-speed Mini-SAS HD cables, providing scalability and high reliability for mission-critical storage of file servers, virtualization, surveillance, medium-sized data center, multimedia, and more.
Storage expansion for dual-controller NAS
Flexibly and economically expand the storage space of a Windows® server for petabyte-level storage capacity.
Dual path design
Dual path mini-SAS design with a redundant power supply for enhanced system reliability.
DataBolt™ bandwidth optimization
DataBolt™ bandwidth optimization combines two 6Gb/s connections into one 12Gb/s data stream to achieve faster speed with existing 6Gb/s infrastructure.
Windows® S2D failover cluster
Windows® servers can individually connect to a TL-R1620Sdc and be configured into a S2D (Storage Space Direct) failover cluster.
Flexible storage management
Windows® users can manage the storage space and settings of the TL-R1620Sdc with the QNAP JBOD Manager app.
Short depth design
The space-efficient short depth design makes it easy to install in small media cabinets or places with a lot of cabling. (Short rail kit RAIL-S01 requires optional purchase.)
Failure-resistant with a dual-controller, dual-path design
Connect the TL-R1620Sdc to a dual-controller Windows® server and create a redundant cross loop configuration that provides expansion units with redundant paths to the host server and protection between JBOD connections. If one or more paths to the TL-R1620Sdc disconnect, other expansion units can still communicate with the host server. This is essential for intermachine data protection and capacity scalability for uninterrupted mission-critical enterprise tasks.
Connect up to 7 expansion units for petabyte-level storage capacity
The host Windows® server requires a compatible Broadcom® SAS HBA PCIe expansion card.
Note: The maximum total storage capacity will vary based the limitations of the Windows® server.
Highly efficient, reliable and scalable
The TL-R1620Sdc is powered by a low-power 28nm SAS35x28R SAS Expander and supports 12/6 Gb/s SAS/SATA drives. Both controllers have three Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8644) ports, and each SAS wide port combines four SAS 12Gb/s channels for up to 48Gbps bandwidth.
Supports SAS DataBolt™ technology, delivers 12Gb/s speed using existing 6Gb/s infrastructure
Featuring Broadcom® SAS DataBolt™ bandwidth optimization technology, the TL-R1620Sdc has an intelligent data buffer for transferring data to drives at speeds that match the performance of the host server. Whether the TL-R1620Sdc uses 12Gb/s or 6Gb/s drives, the host server will transfer data to the TL-R1620Sdc at 12Gb/s, allowing you benefit from high-speed 12Gb/s SAS transmission with existing 6Gb/s infrastructure.
Exclusive drive monitoring tool for Windows® servers
The QNAP JBOD Manager features a user-friendly interface, allowing you to intuitively manage the TL-R1620Sdc. In addition to operating status information, you can also see the topology of the connected device, configure SAS zoning settings, and manage the firmware of all connected TL-R1620Sdc.
Learn More: QNAP JBOD Manager
Note:
1. The QNAP JBOD Manager app for SAS JBOD supports Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 and 2019. The SAS HBA installed on the Windows Server must also support the same Windows Server version to ensure QNAP JBOD Manager can recognize the server.
2. Windows servers with Broadcom® SAS RAID cards installed will not be shown in the QNAP JBOD Manager’s Connection Topology due to the expansion card’s limitations.
Supports command-line interface
You can connect your computer to the TL-R1620Sdc via the Console Port and use your command line interface (CLI) to configure the TL-R1620Sdc.

Note: A password is required to use the CLI. The default password is 00000000 (eight zeros).
Leverage the 6Gbps SAS to SATA drive adapter to install 2.5-inch SATA SSDs
While SATA 6Gb/s SSDs provide high-performance yet affordable storage, the lack of dual-port support makes them unsuitable for dual-controller environments. The QDA-SA2 adapter allows the use of a SATA 6Gb/s drive in a 3.5-inch SAS drive bay - providing the ability to expand storage capacity by using cost-effective SATA drives. By installing a SATA drive with the QDA-SA2 into the dual-controller TL-R1620Sdc, the SATA drive can share these SAS dual-port advantages to ensure a high-availability, fault-tolerant enterprise storage environment.
