A group of men have been forced to eat their words after taking part in a Pilates class that they initially thought they'd ace. However, footage shared by their instructor says otherwise.
Jessica Casalegno, 31, has gathered 12.7 million views on TikTok (@jess_casa) after sharing a montage of clips from a session involving five men, referred to as "gym bros" and bodybuilders, struggling to keep up—which shows that the slow and controlled movements are far from easy.
She told Newsweek: "Before the class, all of the boys were very confident—as you can see, they're very strong from their physiques—but during the class, they were humbled.
"They were shocked at how much they loved—and loved to hate—this intense workout and can't get enough of the challenge now."
Casalegno, who is the director of Dryp Sweat Hub in Dubai Marina in the UAE (@dryp.sweat.hub), explained that it is a common misconception that Pilates is "easy." After all, it is just a mind-and-body regime, right? Wrong.
"Pilates is resistance training, and it also allows you to hone in on some of the smaller muscle groups that you aren't able to focus on in a more 'traditional' gym setting. Pilates is also unique in that it allows you to work on strengthening your muscles while simultaneously lengthening them," Casalegno said.
"Part of the reason why reformer Pilates is so challenging is that you are working on a moving platform—significantly challenging your stability is a huge factor."
As seen in the video, the men are using light weights and stretching their bodies in ways they are most likely not used to. There also isn't a dry forehead in the studio, as the tough session has left them all moaning and groaning.
"Pilates always has a way of challenging everyone—even those who appear to be sculpted and stronger than your average Joe," said Casalegno, adding that they weren't put off Pilates and are now repeat clients.
"I am happy to say they very much enjoyed the session—even if their complaints and death glares in the video seem to say otherwise.
"The Pilates people who come to train with me love the pain that is Pilates and love to see the transformations in their body, health, and body awareness that they get with consistent training with me."
TikTok Reacts
The video has delighted many users, racking up 1.6 million likes and almost 6,000 comments. Many of which have found it strangely "satisfying" to watch.
"The fog on the mirrors is CRAZZZZY," wrote @maskedgirlie44 and Casalegno responded: "They were seriously working up some insane amounts of body heat."
"Pilates is NOT for the weak omg. I still have ptsd," said @vic0zzz and @katyrowebrown added: "Men doing Pilates is my absolute favorite thing to watch."
"No one ever believes me that Pilates is tough," said @eye_dalia.
