Is this club the favorite to sign Burnes?

November 27th, 2024

MLB.com is keeping track of the latest news and rumors surrounding .

Nov. 27: Giants 'believed to have significant interest' in Burnes (source)
Losing Blake Snell is tough for the Giants, but losing him to the Dodgers? That has to sting L.A.'s longtime rival. San Francisco now has a massive void to fill in its rotation. There are a handful of high-quality starting pitchers left on the free-agent market, and the Giants might look toward the very top of it to find their Snell replacement.

According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, the Giants "are believed to have significant interest in Burnes." But it will take more than the reported five-year, $182 million contract to get Burnes, who is younger and has proven more durable than Snell throughout their careers.

"Given Snell’s contract – which will ultimately be worth between $160-165 million in present-day value taking the deferrals into account – there’s no reason to think that Burnes’ deal won’t be worth more than $200 million," Feinsand wrote.

Many clubs have reportedly shown some level of interest in the 30-year-old Burnes. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal recently reported (subscription required) that Burnes met with the Red Sox. The Orioles have also been linked to the right-hander, but they may address their starting staff via trade as one NL executive told Feinsand that the O's are "the team to watch" for White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet.

Nov. 21: Is Burnes still atop Orioles' list of SP targets?
Burnes was fantastic for the Orioles in 2024, but his first season in Baltimore might turn out to be his last.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal (subscription requried), Burnes has met with the Dodgers and the Red Sox, and he is being pursued by other clubs. The Orioles, however, "appear more focused" on other starting pitchers, including left-hander Max Fried.

This report comes a few days after MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi said the Orioles and the Dodgers are the "leading candidates" for Burnes.

In their first offseason under their new ownership group, the Orioles could be more open, compared to recent seasons, to spending the money necessary to bring back high-priced free agents such as Burnes and outfielder Anthony Santander. But the 30-year-old Burnes is younger than those other aces and has been one of MLB's most durable pitchers in recent seasons. So although the Orioles are looking to fill the void at the front of their rotation, Burnes' price may be too rich for Baltimore's blood.

Nov. 12: Burnes drawing 'significant interest,' with 3 teams strong fits (report)
Burnes, the marquee MLB starter on the free-agent market, is drawing "significant interest," Jeff Passan reports in his 2024-25 offseason preview (subscription required).

Three teams stand out as good fits for the former Cy Young Award winner: the Giants, Blue Jays and Orioles.

Passan writes that Burnes could anchor the San Francisco starting rotation alongside Logan Webb, and he could do the same atop a Toronto rotation with Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, Chris Bassitt and Bowden Francis.

A reunion with the Orioles also makes sense, after Burnes led Baltimore to the playoffs in 2024 following the Orioles' blockbuster trade for him last winter. Passan writes that Burnes returning to Baltimore "would be welcome" as the O's try to fortify their rotation this offseason.

Nov. 7: Yankees, Red Sox among possible landing spots for Burnes
Burnes' first season in the AL East was a stellar one as he pitched to a 2.92 ERA with 181 strikeouts in 194 1/3 innings for the Orioles. Baltimore hopes to keep Burnes, but the No. 1 pitcher in this year's free-agent class may move elsewhere this winter.

He just may not move out of the division.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees have "checked on" Burnes, among other headline free-agent starting pitchers. Elsewhere, the Red Sox could be an option for Burnes since Boston plans to be active in the market, per The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham. Boston could also address its need for starting pitching via trade and could be a good match with the White Sox for a trade involving All-Star left-hander Garrett Crochet.

The Yankees have been linked other big-name free-agent pitchers beyond Burnes so far this offseason, including Max Fried and Sean Manaea.
