What was that 1980s TV movie/show with an alien news show?
Well, I think that might be it! I sort of conflated parts of it into one scene but that seems to be it! Definitely has a much different tone watching it thirty years later.

I need helping identifying the era of this photograph.
As far as we all know the family at this point is your standard white A-S Protestants. There's nothing for these familIes that I can think of that would influence the fashion outside of the standard daily needs or styles.
It's the only photo of the bunch like this. But the 20s time frame meshes with the dates I have for potential candidates. The clothing seemed old-fashioned for the 20s based on my initial assumptions.
As for size: the copy I… [more]

There were only two ancestors that would have been the right age (18-30) to fight in WWI, but as far as I know, none of them went overseas.

I spoke to my grandmother again about this and she was able to shed a little more light on the picture's origin, which was information she didn't originally seem to know. I'll let it pass since she's up there in age.
The photograph is definitely from the Surry County, NC side of her family. So that narrows it down to two people, only one of which I know. Based on what I do know about those two families, it's probably the woman born in Indiana in 1839 who moved to NC… [more]

Plant or weed identification time.
Based on some of the pictures I'm looking at online, I think raspberries might be the winner. I think I'll let one of them grow (the one in the picture is the biggest one so far) and see what happens. Having a raspberry bush right in the middle of the yard might be a little inconvenient though.

How do I light my gas fireplace?
OK, inspector called. Thanks, folks.

Someone smashed into our parked car and drove away. What recourse do we have?
Sorry this happened! I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago and, of course, my uninsured motorist coverage did not include property damage (apparently this can vary by state). I filed a police report, but nothing ever came of it.

when you hear yourself chew, is that noise as loud as it is inside your skull ?
I work in a quiet office and I can hear people eating carrot sticks, chips/pretzels and apples in their cubes. I can't say I can specifically tell when they're eating salads, but generally I can tell when they're eating crunchy foods. Other coworkers have remarked about hearing people eat, so I don't think I'm the only one who can hear these things.

Need help choosing two new (to me) cars!
Thanks for all of your responses. We opted against the Land Cruiser because the dealership seemed kind of shady. This weekend we bought an '07 4Runner with 86K miles. We got a great price on it and I'm hoping it lasts forever, of course! Still haven't figured out the Civic trade-in.

Entertain my cats, please! Before they destroy the place.
All three of my kitties love the Kong Wubba. I bought one at Petsmart and then had to go buy two more the next day because they are all so obsessed.

Water shoes?
Five Ten Canyoneers are really great for traction and comfy on dry land, too. They're slightly over your budget, but awesome.

I think I forgot how to laugh....seriously.
Jim Gaffigan is one who doesn't use profanity (not that I can recall, at least) and he's pretty awesome. There's plenty of his stuff on YouTube.

Glue, caulk or drill?
Thanks everyone for your responses. I didn't muster the courage to drill into the tile, but ended up using some heavy duty Loctite super glue. The piece I was attaching was only about 3 inches long, and the super glue worked great. I thought about caulking after, as suggested, but the bond is so secure that I'm giving it a while to see if it continues to hold as tightly as it is right now. I was going to go with Liquid Nails as so many of you had said, but when I looked at the handy little… [more]

Looking for an Optometrist in Salt Lake City or South Jordan, Utah.
After trying at least three other optometrists in the area, I had a positive experience at InVision Eye Health in Sandy (near South Towne Mall). I believe I saw Dr. White. I've never bothered to have my records transferred between eye docs.

Forgot to add water softener salt. Did I break it?
I ran into a similar problem and called the manufacturer's phone number on the side of my water softener. A patient person there walked me through the steps to add salt and reset the salt levels. They told me I didn't have to clean it if I didn't want to, nor did I need to go through anything special before dumping in the salt. I just dumped in salt and pressed a few buttons to reset the salt level and it seems to work just fine.

Is magnetic paint worthwhile or just a gimmick?
Thanks for the responses so far. Just a quick clarification: We took them off of the refrigerator and we would take down the two sheets metal and replace them with a larger area of magnetic paint. We wouldn't have all three at once. I think we would only want to have them out on one small wall in our basement game room. Maybe 8 feet wide? Right now the two pieces of sheet metal are about 2.5' x 3'.

We found a larger piece of sheet metal and just went with that rather than experimenting with the magnetic paint, which doesn't seem to be able to hold up to heavy magnets. Thanks for the suggestions!

What's the best way to hike the Narrows?
Thanks for all of your great responses. I'm really excited! I'll post an update when we get back.

Just wanted to post a few suggestions for anyone who ends up doing this hike. We just got back yesterday and had a fantastic time. The weather at this time of year was perfect. The air temperature was in the 80s, but the water was at right around 60 degrees. It was certainly a shock at first, but I got used to it very quickly and most of the time the water temperature was pleasant.
We opted to rent the canyoneering shoes/neoprene booties and hiking sticks from one… [more]

In case anyone ever runs into a similar situation, we ended up hosting the party with friends and neighbors. We made the party BYOB and had the fridge stocked with beer and the coolers stocked with sodas. There really wasn't much to worry about. Everyone got along great and now, 4 months after moving in, we really haven't run into any issues with neighbors at all. We're not best friends quite yet, but they've all been extremely nice. Thanks for all the advice!

How can I avoid getting ripped off by a crappy jeweler?
Thanks everyone. I'll follow up when it's fixed.

I took the ring to a local independent jeweler who cleaned and repaired it for free while I waited. Good as new! Thanks again for the advice.

How can I dig out of this hole fastest?
According to my friend who recovered from a similar situation, if the regular customer service reps at the credit card company refuse to lower your interest rate, you may want to try to be connected to their internal collections department, even though you're not delinquent yet. The collections representatives sometimes have more authority to adjust your rates.
At some credit card companies they have hardship programs available if you are wary of credit counseling… [more]

Ikea To Go
If it's at all practical to do so, try to check your purchases for damage. We recently bought several large items from the Draper, UT Ikea and came home to find that individual boards and shelves were badly cracked/scratched in a few of our purchases. It would be a major bummer to drive home 500 miles and find out that your shelves are damaged.
If you're traveling without passengers, then you could most likely fit everything in an SUV without a problem. Have fun!

Please help us make our trip to Yellowknife super awesome?
Thanks for the suggestions so far! We understand that we're packing a lot into a very short amount of time. For us this trip is all about enjoying the drive and making it to Yellowknife by car. We're okay with the fact that we're not going to come close to seeing and doing everything we would like to if we had a month to take this trip. We're planning subsequent trips to take more time to experience the various parks and major cities.

UPDATE: The trip was amazing. We fell in love with Yellowknife and and the Northwest Territories in general. We're planning on going back as soon as we have a chance to spend much more time, and hopefully in winter to get a feel for the contrast between the pleasant August weather and ohmygodmyfaceisfreezingoff cold. We were a little too early to see the Northern Lights, so we're hoping to make it back at a time when we might be able to catch them.
The drive up there… [more]

Numbering Documents in a PDF
It should work to go to Document>Add Headers & Footers. You should be able to select where on the document you'd like the header/footer to appear, then type in whatever text you'd like, and then choose a page range to which it would apply. I tried it on one of my own PDFs and it seemed to work.

Can you donate anything?
I'm in Utah and we usually donate all sorts of random stuff to Deseret Industries. It seems like they'll accept just about anything you can think of, and they will give you a donation receipt. You can just pull up to one of the loading docks at any of their thrift stores and their workers will unload your donations from your car. I think you can also arrange for pick-up service if you have large items you don't want to move. If you're in the Salt Lake area there are several stores around… [more]

Imagine a world...with no movie theatre popcorn...
My dad has Meniere's. No fun. I definitely recommend giving the crock pot idea a shot. My dad isn't big on cooking at all, but he uses a crock pot to make large batches of easy stews and soups, which don't require much skill or effort to prepare. He keeps his freezer stocked with single-serving portions to eat whenever. He compensates for missing salt with a whole lot of other herbs and spices, rather than using salt substitutes. Doing that has been a big help in breaking his cravings for… [more]
