Share your Instant Pot love here!
My sister-in-law got one. Then my mom got one. Now I've got one, and I made phở bò in an hour.
IN AN HOUR.
Metafilter, there is nothing that fights off that it's-dark-and-cold-at-4:30 like a bowl of phở bò. With this IP recipe, you have about thirty minutes of prep, then you dump everything in the pot and walk away.
SO. GOOD.
Also, my parents now make their own Greek yogurt with their IP, and it tastes great. Cheap as hell, too.

My Town got has Bike Lanes...Yay
Bakfiets. Bakfiets, bakfiets, bakfiets.
Bakfiets.
I love my bakfiets. I had hauled my kid around in a trailer, but I couldn't see her or carry nearly enough groceries. After researching cargo bikes, I figure the bakfiets was what we needed. I have never looked back. Until we moved from Santa Monica to Seattle. Then I had to spring for an e-assist, because hills. So many hills.
I'm a fan of Workcycles, and their latest… [more]

How do I have the best book reading ever?
If you haven't practiced reading the passage, do it a few times. Get the rhythm of your reading, time how long it's going to be. Also, you might catch bits in the text that just don't sound right when read out loud. Scribble them out. Read from the book itself so the audience can see your cover.
Bring a warm, soothing beverage for your voice. Tea with honey, perhaps. I blew mine out at my first reading.
If the room is big enough, borrow or buy a… [more]

What's your single best BBQ party trick?
The morning of the BBQ, take two heads of broccoli and cut them lengthwise to make a bunch of strips with some florets at the top of each. Throw them in a bowl with Caesar salad dressing, mix 'em up, and let 'em sit in the fridge until go time. Grill over medium until done.
Grilled oysters are also awesome. Just toss 'em on the grill until they open. Serve with lime butter.

Just wanted to be sure. I think you'll meet a wider cross-section of writers, editors, agents, and other publishing pros at Worldcon, but it might not be that much wider. The page of attending pros from last year's NorWesCon looks pretty good, and it drew from outside the quite-deep talent pool in the PNW. If you're interested in doing a writing workshop at a con, you'll probably want to go to Worldcon, since the submission deadline for NorWesCon's workshop has passed.… [more]

Adoption 101 Must-Reads?
When we started out five years ago, I wish we'd known right away that we would need an attorney. The agency we went to was great, but they did not tell us until the end of the formal interviews and classes that most birth mothers will work through attorneys first so they can have a little more say in where their baby is placed. If we'd stuck with the agency, it would have taken us years for a baby to be placed with us. With an attorney, we went from putting our scrapbook together to meeting our… [more]

Is Harvey Mudd located in a safe area?
I went to Mudd from '92 to '94, went back there many times to visit. Holy crap, is that whole place safe and boring, depending on the dorm he moves into. I'm not sure how the cultures have changed since I was there, but he sounds like he'd fit in at Case, East, or South. If he's that sheltered, West, North, and probably Linde are right out.
The area itself is equally safe and boring. i think it'll be okay.

So I'm staying home with a baby. What do I do now?
Coming on three and a half years. Here are the things that saved my bacon:
1) Etrigan mentioned walks: oh my FSM YES. I used to sling my daughter and schlep around the neighborhood for miles and miles. Things got even better when her neck was strong enough to use the Bjorn. Bjorns are the shiz. The kid gets to see stuff, you get to see stuff, and I found the walking to be a major stress relief for me. Used to be the only way to get my kid to sleep, too. Walk walk walk.… [more]

Am I about to doom myself by not using sodium nitrite in my bacon cure?
This site had the recipe and the Botulism Doom comment.
The belly sat uncovered on a wire rack above a baking dish for three days. Then I needed more room in the fridge (sauce and soup pots took over, so everything moved up), so I popped it into ziplock bad, squished the air out, and let it sit another four. Tonight, I rinsed the belly, dried it, and set it back on the wire rack to form a pellicle.

Thanks, everyone!
To answer some questions, first, the fridge, while not wiped down with bleach, is clean. And, yes, it's 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
I'm going to roast and smoke for this batch. Future bellies I'll stick straight into the ziplock without the open exposure, plus extra cold packs like jbenben suggested.
The one thing I'm wondering about now is that, for years, I've made pork ribs on my smoker with the water… [more]

That is excellent, Orinda. Thank you.
And I should add that I am not opposed to using nitrites in the cure. I just picked some up from Williams-Sonoma right up the street; if I'd looked around some more, I'd have gotten it and used it last week, and we would not have had this discussion. Lesson: Google more, AskMeFi less.
And now, to the kitchen!

For follow-up, I roasted this belly, and, holy cow, was it salty. I froze it and will use it sparingly in future soups and stews.
A week later I did get some pink salt and cured a belly and smoked it and oh my God was it the best bacon I have ever had in my life.

Cellocellocello
I've been taking lessons for about as long as you (started playing in '09, took two years off when my daughter was born), and have had a lot of the same issues. I think everyone does when they start playing. Here's what's helped me:
1) Consistent instruction. It's good you're starting with a teacher this summer, and the sooner you start, the happier I think you'll be. Having someone who can point out your strengths and weaknesses as a player (ie technique, intonation,… [more]

Looking for cello instructor in Los Angeles
I've been taking cello lessons at the Santa Monica Music Center on Santa Monica and 19th for the past year. I highly recommend April Guthrie, their instructor. You buy packages of four half-hour lessons @ $32 a pop, and I think there was a try-one-free deal (though it's been a while, so I may be misremembering that).

John Gray's "Men, Women & Relationships." Read it because my then-girlfriend said it would help our then-floundering romance. I think I threw it once, though it was after she broke up me anyway.

Why is my website so popular in South Korea?
Sorry if that felt like a self-linky, but I figured the Korean giro link wouldn't make much sense without the domain name. Next time, name without link. Mea culpa.
daninnj, all comments are turned off by default. And I have SpamKarma 2 running, so a lot of stuff gets trapped and killed.
visual mechanic, "giro" is the top search term. And while there are some referring sites with ".kr", most of them are from feelor.com, which seems to be a Chinese site.

Which style of writing is best?
Good bits in both, so I combined them into this (with one quick word change and shift):
Druzy clutched the vial, its contents still hot. She crouched in the undergrowth, breath ragged, never taking her eyes from the mansion beyond the rise. Sentries scurried about its courtyards in search of her, and – she had to squint through the dusk to make sure – yes, they made immediately for the stables. More torches lit the gloom. Now she could make out the white-robed… [more]

Travel tips for Kaliningrad?
If you want views of the Curonian Spit, better to avoid Kaliningrad and just go to Lithuania. Granted, I haven't been to Klaipeda in five years, but I liked it then, and the Spit is one of those beautifully desolate places. Plus, the local beer and seafood stews were great.

Cub Scouts - yes or no?

What I remember most about Cub Scouts was good stuff. All of my friends were in my den, and my mom was our den mother, so that made things pretty easy. I really don't remember religion being part of it. While there are religious medals you can earn for exploring your own faith, I don't… [more]

What experience most shaped who you are?
Four moments:
In fourth grade, David Kazyne (I remember the sound of his last name, but not the spelling), who was two years older, kept taunting me on the playground. I was tossing a tennis ball against a backstop, and he kept taking it from me. After demanding he give it back, I punched him in the side of the head.
